COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cradles to Crayons-Philadelphia has launched its annual clothing collection & volunteer service drive to collect winter coats and other items for children in need through Jan. 19, with volunteer shifts on Jan. 17 and 18 across multiple drop-off sites.  Metro Philadelphia

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Gluten-free bakery Flakely will open its new shop at 1007 W. Lancaster Ave. in Bryn Mawr in early February, adding freshly baked goods to its frozen breads. It is also moving its Ardmore and South Philly pastry ATMs (Ambler and Collingswood remain unchanged).  Metro Philadelphia
  • Passional Boutique on South Street received an FDA warning on Dec. 16 that demanded removing chest binders from its website—products the shop insists are meant for adults—and it will continue selling them in-store.  KYW Newsradio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Philadelphia celebrates the country’s 250th birthday with a series titled '52 Weeks of Firsts' that started Jan. 3 at the Athenaeum (the first event honored America’s initial balloon flight) and continues every Saturday in 2026 with themed Firstivals at historic sites including the Mummers Museum on Jan. 10.  Metro Philadelphia

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SEPTA completed overhead wire replacements in the trolley tunnel connecting West Philadelphia and Center City and will test the system before reopening it mid-January (about 60,000 daily riders have used alternative transit since its early November closure).  WHYY

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Shops at Liberty Place, a 147,000 sqft retail complex beneath One and Two Liberty Place in Center City, is for sale as Jones Lang LaSalle pitches it to attract investors. The property sees over 5.1 million visitors annually and maintains 78% occupancy among its 30 tenants + top brands.  WHYY
  • After years of delay, construction has started to overhaul Westpark Apartments at 46th and Market in West Philly. The $500 million project will add nearly 1,000 units and finish in phases by 2030 as part of the Housing Authority’s plan to create a mixed-income community.  WHYY

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Philadelphia 76ers have upgraded Kelly Oubre and Trendon Watford to questionable for their upcoming home game against the Wizards after missing several games due to injury – the team also kept Joel Embiid and Paul George playing well following a loss to the Nuggets.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Eagles entered the playoffs as the No.3 seed after resting starters in Sunday's finale. They will use a strong defense and quarterback Jalen Hurts' leadership to push for a Super Bowl return — hosting a first-round game.  Metro Philadelphia
