  • On Monday, Jan. 19, Philadelphia will observe MLK Day with many grocery stores, liquor stores, pharmacies, and big box retailers open on regular hours (for example, Acme Markets, Whole Foods, and Target) while postal services, banks, and trash collection remain closed; SEPTA runs on its normal schedule.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Friday morning, a heavy fire partially collapsed Bella Vista's roof on Whitaker Avenue in North Philadelphia; the Philadelphia Fire Department sent 80 firefighters + support staff, controlled the blaze by 6:26 a.m., and reported no injuries while investigating the cause.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Philadelphia experimental guitarist Emily Robb debuts her first soundtrack album for a sci-fi film on Jan. 23, pairing her distinctive sound with filmmaker Jessica Kourkounis' vision. She will hold a record release concert with the ER Band on Jan. 31 at Solar Myth + a film screening will begin at 7 p.m.  WHYY
  • Nearly two dozen neighborhoods will display fiberglass Liberty Bell replicas as part of the Bells Across PA project celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday; the replicas, designed by local artists to reflect the city’s diversity & boost local business activity, mark a milestone for community celebrations.  WHYY

  • The Franklin Institute debuts its immersive multimedia show, Franklin’s Spark, today at 11 a.m. at Benjamin Franklin National Memorial during Ben’s Bash, a birthday celebration that offers family-friendly learning activities on science and history, funded by a donation from Ed Satell and the Satell Family Foundation.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

  • After Bo Bichette headed to New York, the Phillies re-signed All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto to a three-year, $45 million contract (with $5 million in incentives) to boost team stability for the upcoming season.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Phillies reliever Brad Keller has accepted an invitation to pitch for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic and will join Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber. Team USA will play its first exhibition on March 4 in Houston as it prepares for Pool B matchups beginning on March 5.  Metro Philadelphia
  • An 11-year-old Eagles fan’s blunt remark that coach Kevin Patullo should be replaced spurred his exit from the team, and Philadelphia locals welcomed the change.   • Former Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette agreed to a 3-year, $126 million deal with the New York Mets that features opt-outs and a no trade clause, leaving the Phillies to consider J.T. Realmuto and other options to fill their catcher role.  Metro Philadelphia
