- ➤ The 31st annual MLK Day of Service took place early Monday at Temple University (its first time since 2009) at Pearson/McGonigle Hall, where volunteers built literacy kits and book arks and hosted a kids’ carnival with educational activities. - ➤ Grassroots organizers held a workshop Monday, Jan. 19 in Germantown to show residents how to oppose rising development that could push out longtime neighbors. The session, organized by GREAT, stressed that every resident must act to protect affordable housing & maintain a mixed-income community. WHYY
- ➤ The Junior League of Philadelphia will host Après in the City: A Snowed-In Social on Feb. 21 at Attico Rooftop in Center City. - ➤ Manayunk will host the Founders Philly Freeze-Out and MNYK Chowder Crawl on Saturday, Jan. 31, with a 9:30 a.m. run that kicks off a day of live ice carving, craft beer specials and chowder samples along Main Street. - ➤ Philadelphia unveiled 22 artist-designed Liberty Bell replicas ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration. - ➤ A new water report shows that 37% of Pennsylvania’s waterways remain impaired, with 852 more miles added since 2024 (an increase longer than a drive from Philadelphia to Erie). - ➤ Since 2023, Philadelphia-area nursing homes have paid nearly $5.3 million in fines for safety violations, affecting almost half of 182 facilities and including a Bristol Township center that incurred a $418,000 fine following an explosion that killed three as state officials require plans of correction. - ➤ After losing its federal status, a three-location clinic received $9.5 million from Penn to form a new legal entity and continue serving low-income Philadelphians. The clinic will compete for a $4.2 million annual grant in March (new setup began in July). The Philadelphia Inquirer
