CULTURE NEWS

  • Fifteen greater Philadelphia-area chefs and restaurants have been nominated for the 2026 James Beard Awards, including five local chefs in the Best Chef Mid-Atlantic category and additional nominees from South Jersey & Delaware.  KYW Newsradio
  • Local chefs in Philly are reimagining comfort foods with global twists using seasonal ingredients while offering treats like pierogies with crème fraîche & caviar, bao buns with provolone, and crawfish pot pie. Visitors can enjoy these inventive dishes at popular spots such as Harp & Crown and Sampan.  Metro Philadelphia
  • On Thursday, Jan. 22, Philadelphia-raised Gregory Alan Isokov performed an intimate set at The Met, while a grown-up book fair is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 24 at Love City Brewing where attendees can trade gently used books and enjoy craft brews (entry is $10).  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The School District of Philadelphia has proposed closing 20 schools to address under- and over-enrollment and aging facilities. The board will review the plan on Feb. 26 (if adopted, changes will start for the 2027 to 2028 school year) as transition teams assist staff and community.  WHYY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The city is expecting its first double-digit snowfall since 2018 with forecasts calling for up to 14 inches this weekend and prompting impromptu snowball fights in Rittenhouse — local events like the Keystone Sacred Harp Convention may shift indoors if the storm holds.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Eagles will lose DB coach Christian Parker as he joins the Dallas Cowboys as their new Defensive Coordinator; Parker boosted the team’s defense + mentored rising talents over two seasons.   • The Sixers plan to convert two-way players Barlow and Walker to standard NBA contracts before the Feb. 5 trade deadline to manage salary cap pressure. They are also exploring trade moves and potential signings to shed salary and add cost-controlled talent (including interest in Keon Ellis).  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia’s Sixers overcame a crucial missed call in overtime on Thursday night to edge the Rockets 128-122 — Joel Embiid had a triple-double while Kelly Oubre scored 26 points. The team will host the Knicks on Saturday at 3 p.m. to end their home stand.  Metro Philadelphia
