COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Philadelphia Water Department warns residents to let faucets drip and clear snow from curb boxes (to help keep pipes from freezing) as temperatures stay below freezing through Sunday with Saturday forecasts hitting 0 degrees.  WHYY

  • Good Bones premieres today at Arden Theatre, drawing inspiration from debates over a Chinatown stadium plan. Playwright James Ijames revised his 2017 script to address real neighborhood struggles as part of the Citywide James Ijames Pass featuring multiple local productions.  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The School District of Philadelphia announced plans to close 20 schools in the 2027-2028 school year (18 in Northeast, Northwest, and West Philadelphia) after hosting community input sessions. The proposal, which includes merging six schools and upgrading others, will be finalized after a Board of Education review this winter.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Philadelphia Water Department is working to fix a six-inch water main break that has poured water on mid-16th Street near Federal Street in Point Breeze since Monday. Neighbors said icy conditions make it hard for drivers while the repair timeline remains unknown.  KYW Newsradio
  • Residents face delays with unplowed streets after a 9.3-inch snowfall as city crews, including excavator teams & Future Track trainees, work nonstop to clear secondary roads and address trash collection issues. SEPTA has adjusted bus routes due to icy conditions on these less-served streets.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia's Office of Homeless Services announced that the 2026 Point-In-Time Count (originally scheduled for Jan. 28) is postponed to Feb. 25 due to persistent extreme cold and a recent snow emergency that stretched city resources. HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study shows that more people in Pa. are switching from smoking to vaping, which has cut funding for anti-smoking programs to 14% of what is needed ($140M). Elizabeth Hensil (director of advocacy) of the American Lung Association said state lawmakers and the governor’s office are seeking better support.  KYW Newsradio
  • Chariot Equities purchased the former Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Delaware County for $10 million and plans to restore hospital and emergency services. Officials said a nonprofit healthcare system will be selected in six months — the first phase will take about two years due to needed repairs.  KYW Newsradio
  • Workers installed the final beam Wednesday for CHOP’s new 26-story Robert Children’s Health Tower as part of the hospital’s major expansion. Funded by a record $125M gift from the Roberts family, the tower has 700 private rooms + specialized treatment areas and is set to open in 2028.  KYW Newsradio

  • The Eagles are planning for the April NFL Draft in Pittsburgh as GM Howie Roseman outlines using two 3rd-round picks to target top-50 players & meet team needs while several prospects play in the Senior Bowl this week.
