CULTURE NEWS

  • Danny Gardner stars as Lumiere in Disney's 'Beauty and the Beast' musical at the Academy of Music. The Reading native brings his childhood dream to life (Disney’s first North American tour in over 25 years) and will perform from Feb. 11 to Feb. 22.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Independence Hall reopened Thursday after a 119-day closure for repair and maintenance — the historic site now offers free timed tour tickets with a $1 handling fee while the Visitor Center gives out decorated cookies to the first 250 guests at the park.  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Temple University released its 10-year strategic plan on Wednesday for its North Philadelphia campus. The plan details a new 1,000-bed residence hall (beginning in 2027), a STEM center, more green space, and an upgraded honors program to enhance student success and community impact.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia School District proposed closing 20 schools and reassigning nearly 32,000 students to other facilities (with planned upgrades in some buildings) to address unused space, though the proposal may disproportionately affect Black students. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local fire companies in Nether Providence, Swarthmore, and Rose Valley are considering a merger to create a regional department amid declining volunteer numbers & aging equipment. The proposal, which could take up to three years, aims to boost fire service efficiency.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia Water Department has implemented emergency measures including 24 hour ice patrols at its Schuylkill and Delaware river intakes in response to below freezing temperatures that led to 147 water main breaks in January—officials advise residents to gently thaw frozen pipes to prevent further damage.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • SEPTA announced new Regional Rail schedules will take effect Sunday, Feb. 1, adding trips on Wilmington, Trenton, and Chestnut Hill East lines plus more airport service from Wayne Junction. New MARC rail cars will operate Monday, Feb. 2, and Fox Chase service will have weekday shuttle buses until Apr. 3.  Metro Philadelphia

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Eagles have named Sean Mannion (33) as their new offensive coordinator for the 2026 season, replacing Kevin Patullo after an extensive search. Mannion, who gained coaching experience with the Packers and Seahawks, is expected to bring fresh ideas to the team’s offense.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Stein Line reported that Philadelphia has not contacted Milwaukee about Giannis yet but noted that the former MVP+ is interested in teaming with Tyrese Maxey, adding fuel to trade deadline talks.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Sixers will seek a second straight win when they host the struggling Kings at 7:00 p.m. at XFinity Mobile Arena (home of the 76ers), following Tuesday’s win over the Bucks. With nearly the entire lineup expected, the team looks to secure an easy win.  Metro Philadelphia
