CULTURE NEWS

  • Philadelphia’s Institute of Contemporary Art is hosting “A World in the Making: The Shakers,” a collaborative traveling exhibition that shows how the historic Shakers influenced modern furniture and design (it runs through Aug. 9) and opens this weekend.  WHYY
  • A dozen Mummers string bands performed at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday (after Jan. 1 storms led to minor injuries and damaged props) to revive their New Year’s parade. Though Arctic air forced one band to withdraw, thousands braved the cold to cheer the lively tradition.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

  • The Sixers see a financial boost after star Paul George is suspended for 25 games on Saturday, costing him $11.7M + the team earns a $5.8M luxury tax credit, keeping them just $1.3M above the tax line as they near the NBA trade deadline.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Flyers are battling a tough season with losing streaks and injuries that hamper offense, defense, and goaltending and risk extending their playoff drought to six years & sparking growing fan frustration, leaving coach Rick Tocchet facing pressure to fix a flawed roster.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Philadelphia Phillies signed veteran utilityman Dylan Moore on Friday evening under a minor league deal that includes an invite to spring training. Moore may compete for a roster spot and earn up to $3.5 million (with bonuses added) if he makes the team this season.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Sixers won 124-114 against the Pelicans Saturday night with Joel Embiid scoring 40 points (11 rebounds and 4 assists) in a game that honored the 2000-2001 Eastern Conference Champion team led by Allen Iverson.
