  • On Thursday, three new student representatives joined the Philadelphia Board of Education as nonvoting members to share student input while the board reviews a facilities plan recommending closing 20 schools—fresh voices set to strengthen communication.  KYW Newsradio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge is weighing Mayor Cherelle Parker’s request for the National Park Service to restore the slavery exhibit at President’s House. Panels were removed on Jan. 22 following an executive order — exhibit materials are now stored at the National Constitution Center as a ruling is awaited.  Metro Philadelphia

  • Philadelphia officials warn residents to brace for dangerous cold lasting through this week with below freezing temperatures and wind chills in the single digits at night. City services offer warming centers and guidance on frozen pipes plus emergency measures, urging neighbors to check on the vulnerable.  Metro Philadelphia

  • After the Sixers honored Allen Iverson’s 25th anniversary season on Jan. 31, All-Star Tyrese Maxey stressed his commitment to winning and leaving a lasting mark on Philadelphia basketball—he said he works tirelessly every night.   • After scoring 40 points against the Pelicans, Sixers star Joel Embiid was left out of the 2026 NBA All-Star reserves, leaving Tyrese Maxey as the only team representative (the game begins Friday, Feb. 13 in Inglewood with the main event on Feb. 15).  Metro Philadelphia
  • Unrivaled Basketball set a record on Jan. 30 by drawing 21,490 fans at Xfinity Mobile Arena—marking the first professional women’s basketball doubleheader in decades. Local stars Kahleah Copper and Marina Mabrey shone as the crowd cheered the historic event.  WHYY
  • The Phillies are working to trade Nick Castellanos fast ahead of spring training starting Thursday, Feb. 12—his subpar season and $20 million salary have reduced teams’ interest. They must act quickly to avoid keeping a distracting contract as pitchers and catchers report for training.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is expected to retire soon, and the team is reviewing options after DB coach Christian Parker joined a rival team.
