Good morning, Philadelphia. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 10th of February.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Philadelphia Parks and Recreation will transform the decades-empty LOVE Park Welcome Center, known as the flying saucer for its round glass roof, into a community hub with coffee and light food. Thirty groups proposed ideas; proposals are due March 18, vendor selection is in April and work starts in May.  KYW Newsradio

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A burst water pipe at Jefferson Station closed Section A Monday evening — SEPTA said trains kept serving the station on other platforms, with cleanup set to finish in time for Tuesday’s morning rush.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Creative Philadelphia will propose on Wednesday to move the Joe Frazier statue (a 12-ft sculpture by Stephen Layne that has stood in a sports complex for a decade) to the Art Museum steps, as the Rocky statue is relocated upward this fall; the plan will use about $150,000 in city funds.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • On a chilly February Saturday, hundreds visited the Pennsylvania Convention Center for the 34th African American Children's Book Fair, which featured books by over 40 celebrated Black authors and illustrators (including Caldecott winner E. B. Lewis) as City Council leaders supported efforts to connect young readers with Black history.  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Josh Shapiro’s proposed budget plan adds $151 million to Philadelphia public schools and raises basic education and special ed funding as district leaders brace for necessary cutbacks amid a growing deficit (with plans to modernize nearly 160 schools).  Metro Philadelphia
  • Kensington high schools are boosting graduation rates by partnering with nonprofits and offering tutoring, career advice, and check-ins to help students overcome financial and family challenges (including drug exposure and poverty). Experts say strong support networks help build secure futures as graduation gaps narrow.  Metro Philadelphia

HEALTH NEWS

  • A recent survey by Life Insurance Agency Choice Mutual shows that one in three Pennsylvania seniors has been isolated since Jan. 1 after the holidays ended. Many seniors say they have no one to check in on them and worry that winter loneliness may be harming their health.  KYW Newsradio
  • Rising premium costs have forced many older residents to drop their ACA plans, with over 85,000 Pennie enrollees canceling coverage as of (Jan. 15) and some struggling to save funds until Medicare begins.  WHYY

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Eagles hired Chris Kuper as their new offensive line coach Monday morning after four seasons with the Vikings and stops with the Broncos and Dolphins (he is a 43-year-old native of Anchorage) to boost the team ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Philadelphia Phillies' pitchers report this week in Clearwater, and although their top five look strong, the rotation may suffer if any starter gets hurt given the limited backup options. The team may sign a veteran starter to add depth — a move to keep the season on track.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Philadelphia Union, reigning Supporters’ Shield winners, will start their 2026 MLS season on Feb. 21 against D.C. United at 7:30 p.m. with five competitions on the horizon and new key players joining as they aim for a top-four finish (their baseline for success).  Metro Philadelphia
