  • After 15 years in West Philly, Manakeesh Cafe Bakery & Grill closed its Walnut and 45th Streets location on Sunday due to rising rent; meanwhile, the Lebanese restaurant will continue with a smaller menu online and search for a new space in the neighborhood to keep serving popular Ramadan dishes.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Philly Bierfest will take place on Feb. 28 at the historic German Society of Pennsylvania from 2 to 5:30 p.m. The 13th Annual celebration will feature nearly 100 beer pours from local and German breweries, VIP tasting seminars and interactive activities including competitions.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Churchgoers filled Overbrook Farms church on Sunday for the service honoring Rev. Absalom Jones (the founder of African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas) with a 35-minute sermon by Rt. Rev. Michael Curry. The event gained added meaning after a local exhibit memorializing Black Philadelphians was removed from the President’s House Site amid legal challenges.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia Suns cleaned and prepped lion heads for a lion-dance performance as part of Lunar New Year celebrations, showing off local tradition. The group will perform tonight in Chinatown at 10 p.m. and later join the parade on Feb. 22.  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Philadelphia students will soon study the MOVE bombing through a new 4+ week curriculum developed by activists including Mike Africa Jr. The course, set for 59 classrooms, explains the historic event without covering recent abuse allegations.  WHYY

  • After icy snowfall melted, Philly residents found thawed remnants like stray shoes, coffee cups, and preserved dog poop from over 9 inches of snow while some ventured outdoors to enjoy unseasonable warmth — a welcome break before winter returns.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

HEALTH NEWS

  • A measles-infected traveler passed through Terminal E at Philadelphia International Airport last Thursday between 1:35 and 4:30 p.m. Health officials advise anyone without immunity who develops symptoms by March 5 to contact their doctor.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey scored nine points and made three steals in the NBA All-Star Championship final as Team Stars beat Team Stripes 47-21. His performance helped shift momentum late in the game & contributed to the team’s win.  Metro Philadelphia
