COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Media is celebrating 20 years as the nation's first Fair Trade town as local shops & restaurants support eco-friendly practices and fair wages. A campaign led by business leaders and civic groups set the town on a sustainable path that benefits farmers globally.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • On Sunday, about 100 locals gathered on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art to mark the war's fourth anniversary and marched down Benjamin Franklin Parkway toward City Hall; a small group of Iranian demonstrators joined the rally to support human rights and voice hopes for democracy.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mayor Cherelle Parker and library leaders unveiled 'Our Missing Hearts' as One Book, One Philadelphia’s 2026 selection, launching a free four-month reading celebration with events at Parkway Central Library on Apr. 7, Apr. 23, May 8, and May 28 (featuring discussions, readings, film screenings, and book signings).  Metro Philadelphia
  • March for Art brings modern art and community events to South Kensington from March 9 to 20 at Icebox Project Space inside the Crane Arts Building (with free and ticketed events including preview parties, a trunk show, and an evening bash).   • The Dunphys uncovered a trove of historical artifacts in the privies beneath their Philly home and are now giving talks at Colonial Williamsburg — their discovery adds a unique chapter to local history.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Superintendent Tony Watlington Sr. presented a ($2.8 billion) facilities master plan to the Board of Education, proposing the closure of 18 schools with adjustments from community feedback. A public facilities town hall is scheduled for March 12 to gather further input.  Metro Philadelphia

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Philadelphia will spend $620 million on U.S. 250th celebrations — including $120 million for Mayor Parker’s Ring It On events and community beautification. The city expects 1.5 million visitors at anniversary events, the MLB All-Star Game and the FIFA World Cup, potentially boosting the economy by up to $2.5 billion.  WHYY

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Sixers sent Justin Edwards to the Delaware Blue Coats on Feb. 27 to give him more playing time as his minutes dropped this season (Edwards showed better efficiency when he played longer stretches). He is expected to regain his rhythm in the G League before the playoff push.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The 76ers lost 114-98 to the Celtics on Sunday night without Joel Embiid as Tyrese Maxey scored 33 points amid defensive struggles. Philadelphia will host the Spurs and Utah Jazz at 8 p.m. on March 3.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia Union will host rivals NYCFC in their MLS home opener Sunday afternoon as the team debuts its new 1776 Kit + hopes to gain its first league points after a narrow one nil loss to DC United.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Sixers will face the Celtics on Sunday night at 8:00 p.m. at TD Garden without Joel Embiid as he misses three games with a strained oblique, and Philadelphia will rely on Maxey, Edgecombe, and Grimes to meet a tough Eastern Conference opponent—a critical test before the playoff push.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Phillies fans can watch 16 players join the World Baseball Classic as they represent their nations in pool play starting March 4. The games will air on FOX Sports networks with matchups held in San Juan, Houston, Tokyo, and Miami.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Flyers beat the Bruins 3-1 on Saturday as Dan Vladar made 26 saves & Travis Konecny, Jamie Drysdale, and Sean Couturier scored key goals to secure the win. The team now prepares for the NHL trade deadline on Friday.  Metro Philadelphia
