  • Kingsessing Recreation Center reopened Friday afternoon after a $27M renovation that updated indoor/outdoor courts, a pool, game room, boxing gym and community spaces — including a new turf field for youth sports.   • A Philly nonprofit, the Federation of Neighborhood Centers, lost over $426,000 meant for 24 local groups after it froze payments last summer and ended its grant management program in December. CULTURE NEWS

  • Philadelphia’s Mütter Museum is incorporating feedback from nearly 5,000 visitors collected over the past two years to revise how it displays medical specimens and human remains.   • The Independence Seaport Museum opened the exhibit Seeking Profit and Power: Philadelphia, China Trade, and the Making of America yesterday, showing artifacts and manuscripts that track America’s first trade with China and will remain on display until Jan. 23.  WHYY
  • South Philly artist Eric Brunner turned his ALS experience into the sculpture Flickering Souls: Illuminating ALS. The work is at the Parkway Central Library until Friday and will move to the Two Street Club gallery on April 3, built with family help to honor lives affected by ALS.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

  • Philadelphia schools face a proposed $225 million budget cut to reduce a $300 million deficit for next school year, with principals warning that programs+staff may be lost including classroom assistants; Mayor Parker postponed a funding announcement while budgets must be finalized by spring break.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Nearly 700 former UArts faculty and staff are rebuilding careers after the arts school closed in June 2024 — many now work at local colleges. A Still Creating exhibit at Penn State Great Valley’s gallery will debut in June to honor their enduring community spirit.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • College basketball fans packed Xfinity Mobile Arena Friday for NCAA first-round games, cheering teams like Virginia and UConn while Philadelphia locals + out-of-state supporters enjoyed a vibrant March Madness atmosphere.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Tyler Perkins led Villanova back into the NCAA Tournament with a six-game win streak, averaging 18 points and 6.8 rebounds. The Wildcats played ninth-seeded Utah State Friday at 4:10 p.m. on TNT, and his breakout performance, after a difficult season start (including missing a three-point drought), boosted the team’s confidence.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia sports fans recall ten iconic NCAA Tournament moments — from La Salle's Tom Gola in 1954 to Christian Laettner’s buzzer-beater in 1992.
