CULTURE NEWS

  • The Sound of Music’s 65th anniversary tour will be staged at Academy of Music from March 31 to April 5, featuring Tony Award-nominee Christiane Noll as Mother Abbess and innovative staging by director Jack O'Brien (offering a fresh take on the classic).  Metro Philadelphia
  • An Atlantic City woman’s costume jewelry collection now adorns Philly’s drag queens, as Rose Jarboe (a local advocate) said the pieces act as armor for queer and trans people.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Drexel University will launch its accelerated three-year med program in the 2028-29 academic year to train primary care, pediatric and internal medicine doctors amid doctor shortages. The program will enroll 50 students initially with a $400,000 grant & Independence Blue Cross Foundation support to reduce training time and debts.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Saturday, more than two dozen demonstrators marched through Center City from senators’ offices to City Hall and urged lawmakers to reallocate funds from the Iran war to support local needs (organized by Peace, Justice, Sustainability Now and allied groups).  KYW Newsradio

SPORTS NEWS

  • Philadelphia hosted early-round NCAA tournament games at Xfinity Mobile Arena on March 20 and 22, drawing nearly 20,000 fans to see matchups like Tennessee vs. Miami, while local teams were eliminated early and players + fans now look forward to future contests.  WHYY
  • The Sixers ended their road trip with a 126 to 116 win over the Jazz as rookie VJ Edgecombe recorded his sixth double-double (22 points and 13 rebounds) in his first matchup against Ace Bailey. The team will host the Thunder later today at 7 p.m.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Joel Embiid is set to miss his 13th consecutive game today as the Sixers host the Thunder after suffering an oblique strain on Feb. 28; coach Nick Nurse remains hopeful yet unspecific about his return while the team reports concerns for Dominick Barlow (ankle sprain) and Tyrese Maxey (finger injury).  Metro Philadelphia
  • On March 21, the Philadelphia Union lost 2-1 to the Chicago Fire at Subaru Park on Kid's Day for their fifth straight MLS loss; Hugo Cuypers opened the scoring and Jonathan Bamba secured the win while Union legend Ale Bedoya (in his worst run ever) said the team showed frustration.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Union II is set to bounce back from its first loss as it travels this Sunday afternoon to face defending champions Red Bull New York II at MSU Soccer Park at 5 pm ET — Coach Richter noted the busy week featuring key youth call-ups and the signing of midfielder Paco Dadi.  Metro Philadelphia
