CULTURE NEWS

  • Philadelphia hosted a thrilling Phillies home opener yesterday at Citizens Bank Park as fans now look forward to spring events. Today, Wanda Sykes will perform at The Met and the 100th annual Cherry Blossom Festival will brighten Fairmount Park this weekend with live music and food.  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Philadelphia School of Circus Arts’ Kid’s Day Off Circus Camp will run from March 30 through April 5 at its Mt. Airy campus (6452 Greene St.), offering daily sessions from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with extended care for Kindergarten through seventh-grade participants to learn circus skills and teamwork.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Montco Intermediate Unit staff criticized agency leaders at a board meeting in Norristown after a 14-day African safari charged to agency funds was revealed as part of a professional development trip (raising accountability questions). ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society will plant and distribute 650 trees as part of its spring initiative from April 14 to 19. Volunteers will sort trees at Philabundance Warehouse on April 14 to 17 and plant them on April 18 and 19 — a step to boost the local tree canopy and air quality.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Avian flu has affected over 480 wild birds and nearly 16 million domestic birds statewide, and testing continues daily to monitor risks to local species. Wildlife officials and scientists in Philadelphia are urging biosecurity measures to protect birds such as bald eagles (a local symbol of hope) from further harm.  Spotlight PA

  • A Pennsylvania lawmaker has proposed a bill letting Philadelphia bars stay open until 4 a.m. during World Cup games. The measure aims to give fans extra late-night viewing time on match days.  KYW Newsradio

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Philadelphia Corporation for Aging will convert a historic five-story factory at 642 N. Broad St. in Spring Garden into up to 70 accessible apartments and a community center for residents 62 and older (pending funding and a partnership with California-based HumanGood) to address local affordable housing needs.  WHYY

  • After Opening Day on March 26, the Phillies made key roster changes—outfielder Adolis García replaces Nick Castellanos and new bullpen additions join—while top prospects Justin Crawford and Andrew Painter gear up for upcoming debuts as the team readies to retake the division crown from New York.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia's Love Run will offer a 13.1-mile race and a 7K on Sunday, March 29 with races starting at 7:30 a.m. and gear checks at 5:45 a.m. The event will cause road closures and parking restrictions along parts of the Parkway and Market streets.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • The Phillies have revamped Citizens Bank Park with a new look at the Hall of Fame Club and team store ahead of the All-Star Game in July. New hardwood floors, LED towers, and local chef rotations add luxury plus an improved fan experience.  Metro Philadelphia
