COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Uber will expand its free and discounted ride program for seniors to Northeast Philly in coming weeks through a partnership with KleinLife (serving over 3,500 seniors) after nearly 1,500 rides were provided in West and Northwest Philly to help low-income seniors reach essential appointments.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • A new street soccer park is under construction in Fishtown at Tiptop Playground as Visa and Bank of America create a hub with two regulation-sized pitches, free clinics, and youth programs that will open in June and offer opportunities for casual play and job training (run by Street Soccer USA).  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Dig Inn's new Center City location, across from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, offers a 30% discount to healthcare workers with valid IDs during World Health Week — April 6 to 12 and National Nurses Week — May 6 to 12 as part of its spring menu debut.  Metro Philadelphia

CULTURE NEWS

  • Families can enjoy a variety of spring break events in Philadelphia this season. The Science History Institute will host a free event on Apr. 3 about plastics & environment at 315 Chestnut while museums, theatre camps, simulator races, and a Phillies ballpark tour offer interactive fun across the city.  Metro Philadelphia

ECONOMY NEWS

  • PECO is asking state regulators to approve a 12.5% electric and 11.4% gas rate hike beginning January 2027, which may add about $20 a month to bills for many customers (a move designed to secure nearly $510 million annually for infrastructure upgrades).  Metro Philadelphia

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Pennsylvania will appeal a federal judge’s ruling that ordered the school to provide names of employees affiliated with Jewish organizations to the EEOC in an antisemitism investigation. The decision, due by May 1, has raised privacy concerns among faculty + staff over personal information.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • A Moffet Elementary parent filed a discrimination complaint over a plan to convert the K-5 school into a middle school by merging it with Hackett in South Kensington—calling for equal procedural protections; the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission is expected to investigate within 30 days while the district responds.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • The Philadelphia School District plans to close Wagner Middle School by 2028-29 as enrollment has dropped from 1,000 to 300 students amid a shift to K-8 education—district officials say the building will later be repurposed for affordable housing or job creation.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PECO's union representing 1,600 workers said the company is not bargaining in good faith as the contract expires at midnight today. The union filed an unfair labor complaint after PECO submitted a rate hike request, leaving wages, retirement, and health care unresolved at Center City headquarters.  WHYY
  • PATCO plans to accept tap-and-go credit and mobile payments on May 5 after fixing software glitches, and current Freedom card users will continue to ride. New ticket vending machines will be deployed by June, and upgraded fare gates are scheduled for 2027 (details show ongoing transit improvements).  KYW Newsradio

  • Philadelphia restaurants are offering a range of Easter Sunday brunch specials - from bottomless mimosas and buffet spreads to family-friendly menus and takeout options across the city. SPORTS NEWS

  • Philly Phillies pitching prospect Andrew Painter debuted Tuesday night against Washington at Citizens Bank Park. Manager Rob Thomson said he expected Painter to be himself + stay composed, helping the team break a streak of recent losses.  Metro Philadelphia
