COMMUNITY NEWS

  • 17-year-old Jaheim Warner was honored by first responders after he helped a woman in a truck having a seizure by breaking the window near Tacony Academy. He will receive the Citizen First Responder Award next week + her family thanked him for his brave act.  KYW Newsradio
  • Philadelphia has launched a pilot program called Lotscapes to transform 10 public vacant lots into green community spaces—one site at Diamond and 33rd streets in Strawberry Mansion is being renewed by trainees and local nonprofits and will see blooms in the coming weeks, with expansion planned in 2027.  WHYY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Philly restaurant Roxanne (a Michelin-recommended establishment) was shut down by the city on April 6 for operating without a food license in Queen Village. Chef Alexandra Holt said she is working to resolve the licensing issues and expects to reopen by May 20.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • On Wednesday, Comcast announced two flat-rate Xfinity Mobile plans (Mobile Select at $30 and Mobile Plus at $45 per month) aimed at converting free-line customers to paid service in Philadelphia. The new plans offer international calling and home Wi-Fi speed boosts to integrate its broadband and wireless services.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Philadelphia’s school board postponed its vote on a plan to close 17 schools and upgrade 169 facilities until April 30 after City Council raised funding concerns, and board president Reginald Streater said the delay will let stakeholders better understand the proposal (and work together) to improve the system.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new Purdue opioid settlement plan will largely leave out thousands of claimants, including some in Kensington, as fewer than half of nearly 140,000 claimants will receive payouts. Victims have voiced frustration over tighter eligibility rules after years of legal delays.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • After picking Makai Lemon in the first round, the Eagles are looking at 30 new players for day two of the NFL Draft, including options for offense and defense. Philadelphia fans will soon see which choices add depth to the team & boost its strength.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Eagles selected Miami tackle Markel Bell (21) with the 68th overall pick on Thursday night in the NFL draft, adding their tallest offensive lineman. Bell did not allow a sack in his final season, and the team plans to develop him as depth on the offensive line.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • 2026 NFL Draft pick Makai Lemon, selected in the first round, is valued for his route running and catch-making skills that suit the Eagles’ evolving offense under coordinator Sean Mannion—reporters note that his role could be key if A.J. Brown is traded. Analysts compare him to Amon-Ra St. Brown.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
