  • Local playwright Suli Holum debuts 'The Woman Question', a play about Philadelphia’s first degree-granting med school for women created with 10 years of archival research, focusing on challenges faced then and now in medicine. It runs May 6 to 24 at People’s Light (Malvern).  KYW Newsradio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Franklin Institute and Free Library have launched the Science of Soccer program for youth across 54 branches this summer (May-Aug) to turn 800 young Philadelphians into soccer scientists with hands-on STEM sessions that mirror real play. The program will later expand free access to local organizations beyond library branches.  Metro Philadelphia
  • LeAndrea Baltimore-Hagan, principal at Patterson Elementary in Southwest-Philly, earned a 2026 Lindback Award for Distinguished Principal Leadership.   • Southwark Elementary students testified before City Council about unsafe bathrooms and pest problems, urging officials to act quickly.   • A judge ruled that Penn may delay releasing names of those in its Jewish community while it appeals an EEOC order, and a university spokesperson said the decision protects privacy as the appeal process moves forward today.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia will host its Spring Soirée on Thursday, April 30 at the Ballroom at the Ben in Center City to honor Sen.   • Ten competitors, including Josh Fernandez of Queer Run, are set to race in the growing elite nonbinary division at Sunday’s 10-mile Broad Street Run.   • Bradley Carnell said the Union fell 2 to 0 to Columbus on Sunday, noting key defensive errors and a contentious red card that hurt the team's play. The squad looks ahead to a home game at Subaru Park on Saturday when they host Nashville SC.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Don Mattingly’s Phillies opened a three-game series with a 7-0 win over the Giants Tuesday evening. Jesús Luzardo delivered seven scoreless innings — his best outing so far — with key hits from Turner, Harper and García to secure the clean win.  Metro Philadelphia

  • The Phillies fired manager Rob Thomson after a 9-19 start and named interim manager Don Mattingly Tuesday as the team struggles this season (tied with the Mets for the worst record in the NL East).  Metro Philadelphia
  • After losing 11 of 12 games, the Phillies fired manager Rob Thomson on Tuesday (after a losing streak) and named bench coach Don Mattingly interim skipper; Thomson (who led the team to the 2022 World Series) faced a season collapse amid underperformance.  WHYY
