BUSINESS NEWS

  • Call Your Mother, a D.C.-based bagel and deli, is set to open its second location in the former Metropolitan Bakery space in Rittenhouse by late summer — the venue will keep some elements of the old bakery while showcasing its bright, signature decor.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Lady Hoofers Tap Ensemble will perform a spring concert on May 9 at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, featuring a world premiere by tap artist Dre Torres plus works by established and emerging performers.  Metro Philadelphia
  • cinéSPEAK has announced its Under the Stars Film Festival at Clark Park — a four-week series of outdoor film screenings, live music, and community events taking place every Friday from May 29 to June 19.   • The Please Touch Museum begins construction this summer on Character Quest: Building Character Skills Through Play, an exhibit featuring a 20-foot climbing structure and interactive displays to build social and emotional skills.   • Philadelphia native Tom Campbell inspires collectors to track Liberty Bell replicas cast in 1950 for savings bonds as some are being restored ahead of the semiquincentennial. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices hit a four-year high in Philadelphia as oil and diesel costs surge amid tensions in the Middle East—local pump prices rose by 7 cents overnight to around $4.34 per gallon, while diesel averages nearly $5.88.  KYW Newsradio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Southwark Elementary have repeatedly asked for faster fixes to broken bathrooms as only three working toilets serve 600 kids, cutting into class time. Superintendent Tony Watlington will visit the school this week to assess how repairs can be expedited as part of the district's 10 — year plan.  KYW Newsradio
  • District officials last minute changed plans in Kensington so Hackett Elementary becomes a K-8 school starting in 2027, and parents and teachers worry the building lacks space and programs may be cut. A $6.9 million upgrade (which does not add new classrooms) is planned, but residents call for a delay.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Haverford College President Wendy Raymond rejected a student proposal on Wednesday to review the Lutnick Library name amid concerns over connections with Jeffrey Epstein (the decision reflects current available information), and students plan to continue discussions with college officials on naming policy.  WHYY

  • Congress is set to vote on a new farm bill that local food banks say will make SNAP cuts permanent & worsen food insecurity. Philadelphia’s Share Food Program urged lawmakers to safeguard benefits while agriculture leaders contend federal aid is vital for farmers facing weather losses.  KYW Newsradio

  • On Tuesday night, Quentin Grimes provided open looks + strong defense that helped the Sixers win Game 5 against the Celtics to force a Game 6, and Coach Nick Nurse said he will rely on Grimes in today's home game to keep the momentum going.  Metro Philadelphia
  • After seven losses in 10 games, the Philadelphia Union find themselves near last place in MLS — the team must change players and tactics before a long break starting May 24 gives them a chance to improve their standing.  Metro Philadelphia
