CRIME NEWS

  • Philadelphia police are searching for the man who on Thursday night drove by and fired nearly two dozen shots into a house on the 5900 block of North 15 Street in Ogontz just after 10 p.m.—injuring a 49-year-old woman in her left leg who is in critical condition and a 25-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his shoulder whose condition is unknown while investigators recovered 21 9mm shell casings and one rifle round from the scene.  KYW Newsradio

  • Philadelphia’s Mütter Museum has new leadership after Kate Quinn left — historians Sara Ray and Erin McLeary now lead the museum — and they plan to add context to the exhibits with a pilot project set for August or September.  WHYY
  • Villanova alum Robert Prevost, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1977 and an honorary Doctor of Humanities in 2014, has become the first U.S. pope—making him the first Augustinian pope and marking a major milestone for the Catholic Church.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School leaders in Northeast Philadelphia filled a stainless steel capsule with items such as a brick from the old building, a student photo, and newspaper clippings about the groundbreaking and Eagles win—hoping it lasts better than the previous capsule. The new Holme Elementary School building is under construction and will open in January.  KYW Newsradio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lance Butler and his team at the Philadelphia Water Department plan to introduce thousands of freshwater mussels into the Manayunk Canal after the Flat Rock Dam restoration boosts water flow from the Schuylkill + each mussel filters five to 10 gallons daily. The mussels will be tagged with radio transmitters to track their growth and movement + they are not meant for eating.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Philadelphia Phillies did not ease the workload for catcher J.T. Realmuto as planned after his 2024 knee surgery, and he continued to catch nearly every game. The team has instead started backup Rafael Marchan in select games—hoping that a lighter schedule will help improve Realmuto’s offensive numbers before his contract expires at season’s end.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia Union, enjoying their best start in club history, will host Columbus Crew at Subaru Park—scheduled for 7:30 p.m. today—in a match that sees Daniel Gazdag return to face his former club after his trade to Columbus Crew. The team advanced to the US Open Cup Round of 16 after a penalty shootout with Indy Eleven as Columbus Crew currently leads the Eastern Conference.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley was a guest of honor at the United Disabilities Service Foundation’s gala at Lancaster Marriott where he met fans, joined a live auction, and held a chat with Eagles insider Dave Spadaro. During the chat he revealed his famous reverse hurdle against the Jaguars was marred by a hard hit from a defensive tackle—his back locked up after landing.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Phillies prospect Andrew Painter made his Triple-A debut in Bradenton, Florida, pitching three scoreless innings with one hit, three walks, and five strikeouts, and he said facing adversity helped him learn from his challenges—he skipped Double-A and he will pitch in Lehigh Valley as the team works him toward a spot in the rotation by the summer. This 22-year-old, returning after Tommy John surgery, showed promise in a competitive setting.  Metro Philadelphia
