- ➤ A long-awaited half-mile extension of the Schuylkill River Trail will open Saturday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. near Christian Street. Planning for the $48 million project began 13 years ago (with two cable-stayed bridge towers visible from the Schuylkill Expressway) and it connects Center City with Grays Ferry Crescent while offering a safer route for walkers and cyclists. - ➤ A state bird census shows that eagles have made a big comeback in the region with 40 nests confirmed locally and over 400 throughout Pennsylvania. Officials at FDR Park say one large pine nest appears unoccupied while experts report that eagles are using it—raising concerns about the park’s $250 million makeover. The Philadelphia Inquirer

- ➤ At a special meeting on Wednesday night, Lower Merion commissioners passed a resolution asking lawmakers to secure funding for SEPTA so it does not cut the Paoli/Thorndale Line and four bus routes. The board warned that the cuts would lead to more traffic and pollution and would hurt local businesses, schools and hospitals. The Philadelphia Inquirer
- ➤ Philadelphia voters will cast ballots Tuesday, May 20 on three questions about how the city manages homeless services, funds affordable housing, and oversees its prison system. The proposals call for a new watchdog for homeless services, increased city contributions to the Housing Trust Fund, and a Prison Oversight Board with a dedicated office—measures set to reshape local policies. - ➤ Today the Philadelphia Streets Department began installing speed slots on Lincoln Drive in West Mount Airy to slow car speeds on a busy residential stretch. The pilot project, in collaboration with PennDOT (aimed at enforcing a 25 mph limit) is expected to finish by the end of May (after an average of 13 crashes a year was recorded on the section). WHYY
