CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On Thursday night, two shootings in Philadelphia left two people dead and two injured as one incident near James Logan Elementary School resulted in a young man’s death and a teenager’s injury after 6:00 p.m. while a second shooting in Southwest Philadelphia left one man dead and another in critical condition around 5:18 p.m. The Philadelphia Inquirer
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ George Lane, a senior at Academy at Palumbo, earned a full-ride Gates scholarship after his brother was killed by gun violence—he was admitted to several top universities but chose Temple University to stay in Philadelphia. He will major in biology and plans to work at City Hall this summer as he builds his future in medicine and community service. The Philadelphia Inquirer
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Only 28% of roughly 74,000 Philly mail voters returned their ballots by Thursday evening—far below the typical 80% rate—after ballots were mailed late ahead of the primary for district attorney. Voters must deliver ballots by Tuesday at 8 p.m. in person, via drop box, or by mail to have them counted. The Philadelphia Inquirer
- ➤ Governor Shapiro called on the Pennsylvania General Assembly on Thursday to pass a bill that would let the state Attorney General block healthcare deals harmful to the public after Crozer’s closure left Delaware County at risk. He also announced $1 million to support EMS and lawmakers are set to vote on the measure next month — a step to curb private equity’s role in health care. The Philadelphia Inquirer
- ➤ On May 15th, Philadelphia City Council advanced zoning bills for Mayor Parker’s H.O.M.E. plan to build or save 30,000 homes under a $2 billion initiative—though they left out a proposal to limit their control over city land sales. Lawmakers have not yet acted on other measures and must work before the June 12 session to complete the plan. The Philadelphia Inquirer

- ➤ On Thursday, a mother rushed her baby to Crozer-Chester Medical Center only to find it had closed earlier this month, and doctors & medics at Gov. Josh Shapiro's news conference saved the baby when it stopped breathing.
