COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Philadelphians celebrated the opening of a new 650-foot cable bridge on the Christian to Crescent section of the Schuylkill River Trail that opened on May 17, which now gives walkers, bikers, runners and dog walkers closer access to Grays Ferry Crescent—officials said a Schuylkill Crossing bridge is planned for later this fall to extend the trail to Southwest Philadelphia.  WHYY

CRIME NEWS

  • Police responded at about 2 a.m. Saturday to the 5700 block of Washington Avenue in Southwest Philly and found a 36-year-old man in a Chevrolet with gunshot wounds to his chest, arms, back, and head—he was taken to a nearby hospital and 11 shell casings were found at the scene.  KYW Newsradio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Shapiro used Michael Rubin’s luxury helicopter for at least nine campaign trips worth nearly $68K last year, including trips to New York City, which raised worries about rich donors having too much access to him. Lawmakers and watchdogs called for tighter rules on gifts while his team said the travel was needed to reach voters statewide — all done under state law.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Bucks County Sheriff’s Office has signed an agreement with ICE under the 287(g) program that trains deputies to serve arrest warrants for immigration violations, even though county commissioners have not approved the move. The ACLU of Pennsylvania will file a lawsuit challenging the decision & local officials have raised concerns about its impact on public safety and community trust.  WHYY

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a 108-minute rain delay, the Phillies rallied to an 8-4 win over the Pirates on May 16 — Bryce Harper earned his 1,000th RBI and Alec Bohm extended his 11-game streak while Ranger Suárez picked up his second win. The team overcame an early Pirates lead with a late-inning surge that put them ahead decisively.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Mick Abel (23) will make his MLB debut today at Citizens Bank Park against the Pirates after a tough season last year saw him post a 6.46 ERA, while he now holds a 2.53 ERA in eight starts with improved fastball command. He said a changed offseason approach helped him focus better for his performance on the mound.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Rick Tocchet was introduced as the Flyers’ 25th head coach at a press conference on Apr 14, and GM Danny Briere said his hiring did not change the team’s rebuild—plans include improving the power play and strengthening leadership. A video call with captain Sean Couturier and comments by President Keith Jones highlighted that Tocchet’s local knowledge and positive reputation are meant to help the team progress.  Metro Philadelphia
  • MLS Matchday 14 featured eight rivalry matches during Rivalry Week, with Saturday’s games held and Sunday’s matches running today. Philadelphia Union played at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday against Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium—fans can watch all the games on Apple TV with the MLS Season Pass.  Metro Philadelphia
