CRIME NEWS

  • On Tuesday, police officers testified that former officer Mark Dial shot and killed a 27 year old man, Eddie Irizarry, during a traffic stop on East Willard Street in Fairhill on August 14 when Irizarry was in his car holding a knife—witnesses noted Dial appeared visibly upset at the hospital after admitting he fired his weapon multiple times because he mistook the knife for a gun.  KYW Newsradio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Philadelphia’s Independence National Historic Park, staff shortages—shown by many resignations—have stressed daily operations. Officials say the park needs more workers and funding—especially with more tourists coming and plans for a 250th celebration—to keep key sites open.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Philadelphia Union has put 19-year-old homegrown goalkeeper Andrew Rick into action while veteran Andre Blake recovers from a knee injury. The young keeper has played six times this season and made key stops in MLS and US Open Cup games — his timely saves in a win against Atlanta United and in a penalty shootout against Indy Eleven have impressed coaches and fans.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith promoted the NFL and pledged his future to Philadelphia while on an ambassadorial mission in Spain—saying he would not play for any other team. He watched a soccer match in Barcelona and backed plans for the NFL to host its first regular season game in Madrid featuring the Miami Dolphins and Washington Commanders.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia 76ers rookie Justin Edwards averaged 10.1 points a game and earned a two-year contract with a team option after a rocky season — he showed strong shooting and promise despite his team’s struggles.
