  • A school bus crashed into row homes in North Philadelphia on Tuesday morning around 7:30 a.m. near 17th Street and Lehigh Avenue, and the driver and two attendants are being checked at a hospital.  KYW Newsradio

  • Police closed the Dunkin’ in Northeast Philadelphia after a man was shot and killed behind the store early Tuesday morning near the intersection of Levick Street and Roosevelt Boulevard; homicide detectives are investigating the incident.  KYW Newsradio
  • Two people were killed and nine others injured in a mass shooting in Fairmount Park’s Lemon Hill section on Memorial Day—police said a man and a woman died and three teens were among those injured while investigators review social media footage with no arrests made yet.  KYW Newsradio
  • Two people died and nine others were wounded in a mass shooting in Fairmount Park late Monday night when gunfire erupted around 10:27 p.m. on Lemon Hill Drive at Poplar Drive — police say three teenagers are among the injured and no arrests have been made yet.  WHYY

  • Philly native DJ Diamond Kuts will perform at the Roots Picnic at the Mann Center on May 31 and June 1 as she mentors young DJs and keeps the city's rhythm alive. She said the festival feels like a big cookout where everyone comes together.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former deputy commissioner Terrell Bagby filed a lawsuit last week accusing former commissioner Blanche Carney of sexual favoritism—stemming from an alleged inappropriate relationship—and retaliation after he testified in a sex-discrimination suit. Bagby, demoted in February 2024 after 28 years with the department, still works in the prisons division.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia City Council is reviewing its budget and may add social workers to the Defender Association to reduce high juvenile incarceration rates and lower public costs. Research shows that social workers on defense teams can cut custodial sentence likelihood — a change that may help ease overcrowding at the Juvenile Justice Services Center.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

  • A new pilot project in Philly is using a legal tool to help low-income renters fix unsafe apartments and deduct repair costs from their rent. The program—backed by a $60,000 grant and run by local nonprofits—aims to hold negligent landlords accountable while giving tenants a clear way to seek repairs.  WHYY

  • On May 27, the Phillies won 2-0 against the Braves at Citizens Bank Park. Braves’ ace lost control of a pitch that struck Bryce Harper, forcing him to leave the game while Max Kepler hit an RBI double (his 400th extra-base hit) as the Phillies built their lead.  Metro Philadelphia
