Good morning, Philadelphia. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 29th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Philadelphia will host a busy weekend of parades, races, and festivals, with the Roots Picnic beginning on May 31 at the Mann Center and events like the Philly Pride March, Bike-A-Thon, and Run Fest scheduled for June 1 that will draw thousands of people. These events will cause major road closures and traffic delays—plan ahead for disruptions along key routes like Avenue of the Republic, Old City, and the Gayborhood—so allow extra travel time.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • West Philly pastor Damone Jones has spent over three decades mentoring teens charged with murder by visiting city jails to provide essentials and guidance through his nonprofit—Brothahood Foundation. He helps these troubled youth learn to face the consequences of their actions and builds a foundation for change.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CRIME NEWS

  • Two people died and nine were wounded in a Memorial Day shooting in Fairmount Park Monday as at least three shooters fired modified war ammunition — police said the weapon had a gun switch — leaving officials searching for suspects near historic Lemon Hill.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Police are investigating a theft in South Philly where $150K worth of beef was stolen from a tractor trailer parked on Memorial Day near 34th and Wharton streets — the driver and co-driver discovered Tuesday morning that 10 full pallets and an additional half-pallet were missing while the engine and freezer ran overnight.  KYW Newsradio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Philadelphia’s own Quinta Brunson was given the key to the city by Mayor Cherelle Parker—an honor celebrated at Andrew Hamilton Elementary where hundreds gathered—and she praised a new mural by Mural Arts that she helped design to inspire local youth. Brunson said the tribute reminded her of Philly’s spirit and the resilience that built her success.  KYW Newsradio
  • Philadelphia lawmakers advanced legislation to speed up affordable housing approvals by cutting zoning review times to five business days + building permit reviews to 10 business days as part of the mayor's plan to create 30,000 affordable units over four years. The proposals also limit rental application fees to $50 and allow tenants to pay security deposits in installments, with a final council vote expected next week.  WHYY

SPORTS NEWS

  • FIFA will not use FDR Park athletic fields for practice for the 2026 World Cup and will instead use Rhodes Field at the University of Pennsylvania—this change is due to new scheduling needs and ongoing construction at the park.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
