Good morning, Philadelphia. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 1st of June.

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 18th Annual Flag Festival will open with a First Friday event on June 6 at the Betsy Ross House (239 Arch St.) where locals will see a live cochineal dyeing demonstration. The weeklong celebration will run from June 8 to 14 with interactive flag raising, hands-on flag-making workshops and a grand finale concert on June 14.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Arden Theatre in Old City is staging RENT, a hit rock opera set during the 1990 AIDS crisis, through June 29—featuring Gilbert Diego Sanchez as Angel and Rajeer Alford as Tom Collins. Young audiences have shown renewed energy for the production that brings fresh hope and identity to the stage.  KYW Newsradio
  • On Thursday, many Philadelphians waited in the rain along South 12th Street for a chance to secure one of 25 annual memberships at the historic Palizzi Social Club— the final batch of 100 released since its reopening this month. Those new members will soon enjoy exclusive benefits, including a private dining space and access to traditional Italian dishes.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a meeting on May 29, Philadelphia's Board of Education canceled its vote on a federal asbestos agreement after the Department of Justice said it was not ready to proceed—Board President Reginald Streater explained that more review might be needed.  Metro Philadelphia

SPORTS NEWS

  • Before today the Eagles traded defensive end Bryce Huff to the 49ers after a slow season and a contract change freed up $15M in cap space— the team also signed free agents Azeez Ojulari and Josh Uche to add depth to the defense.  Metro Philadelphia
  • After Walker struggled and Nola’s ankle injury slowed his return, the Phillies may give Mick Abel another start since he pitched well on Friday in Norfolk—striking out eight in 4 2/3 innings while allowing one run. Manager Rob Thomson said they have not yet decided on moving Walker to the bullpen, and Abel’s strong numbers could earn him a spot in the rotation next week.  Metro Philadelphia
  • After losing Friday night's 6-2 opener, the Phillies took the field on Saturday with starter Jesús Luzardo—who had a 2.15 ERA on 11 starts—to try to end their two-game skid as they faced Brewers pitcher Chad Patrick while rain threatened to delay the game.  Metro Philadelphia
