Good morning, Philadelphia. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 2nd of June.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday night, a 31-year-old Uber driver died after he suffered a medical emergency while driving four Canadian tourists from the Roots Picnic and lost control of his white Hyundai on the 1000 block of Marlborough Street in Fishtown (the car struck three parked vehicles and caught fire), though the passengers escaped unharmed.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CRIME NEWS

  • WHYY News uncovered that former helicopter pilot Mark Ciccone warned city leaders on May 13 that the bunker was not a threat before police dropped a bomb on MOVE’s West Philly home—this bombing later destroyed more than 61 homes and killed 11 people.  WHYY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Philadelphia celebrated Pride Month on Sunday with a parade that marched from Old City to the Gayborhood—featuring a 600-foot flag and 70 drummers led by Emily Pratt from Batila Philly—and ended with a day-long festival attended by thousands including Councilmember Rue Landau and Councilmember Jamie Gauthier. Urban Affairs Coalition producer Jeremy Williams said the event showed unity in a time of political challenge.  KYW Newsradio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Cherelle Parker and City Council are in final talks over a $6.7 billion city budget that includes the H.O.M.E. initiative and proposed tax changes, with key committee meetings scheduled on Wednesday to set the stage before summer recess. The negotiations come as a federal report names Philadelphia as a sanctuary jurisdiction — adding uncertainty about potential funding cuts — though officials say there has been no direct impact yet.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Phillies lost by a score of 5 to 2 to the Brewers on June 1 at Citizens Bank Park after a Trea Turner error allowed extra outs that led to a come-from-behind sweep. Manager Rob Thomson said the team will address defensive issues during a six-game road trip starting with Toronto tomorrow—hoping to correct the mistakes for upcoming games.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Despite a three-game losing streak in May, the Philadelphia Phillies finished with a 19-9 record at Citizens Bank Park—Schwarber and Bohm led the offense while the starting rotation kept ERAs low. The team now faces challenges with Jose Alvarado’s 80-game suspension and injuries to Nola and Harper as they prepare for a road trip and additional series in June.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Phillies moved Walker to the bullpen and recalled Abel to start Thursday’s series finale in Toronto — they also brought up Johnson and designated Ruiz for assignment. The team said Harper will return Tuesday to help the lineup.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Since Jose Alvarado's 80-game suspension, the Phillies have reshuffled their bullpen and are weighing the low-risk option of adding former draft pick Joe Mantiply—who is posting a high ERA— to replace a left-handed arm. The potential move aims to bolster their bullpen depth as the team continues to adjust its roster.  Metro Philadelphia
