ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A rideshare driver died when he experienced a medical emergency that caused his white Hyundai to hit three parked cars and burst into flames on the 1000 block of Marlborough Street in Fishtown just after 9:00 p.m.—four passengers escaped uninjured.  Metro Philadelphia

CRIME NEWS

  • A 31-year-old man, Derwin Matthews Jr., who celebrated Philly Pride weekend, was shot in the stomach early Monday on the 200 block of South Camac Street in Center City and was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he died at 6:20 a.m.—police said a fight with an unknown man may have led to the shooting.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Detectives are seeking seven alleged robbers who attacked a 20-year-old near Temple University on May 26 at around 6 p.m.—the suspects jumped him, punched and kicked him, and stole his bag containing IDs and bank cards.  KYW Newsradio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Philadelphia’s 50th annual Odunde Festival will take place in South Philadelphia on Sunday, June 8 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.—the free event features live music, African and Caribbean food, a river procession starting at noon, and two performance stages. Organizers expect large crowds as several streets will be closed to help manage transit and ensure safety.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia celebrated Pride Month on Sunday with its annual Philly Pride March and Festival, honoring the 'Love Unity and Visibility' theme and historic Reminder Day Demonstrations held in front of Independence Hall from 1965 to 1969. The march ended in the Gayborhood and the festival featured over 200 small businesses, performers & food trucks.  Metro Philadelphia
  • CraftNOW Create is partnering with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation to offer the city’s biggest free art class this summer (running from July 7 to Aug. 15) across 129 neighborhood sites; the program will supply take-home kits (which include free museum passes) to help local students explore art during break.  Metro Philadelphia

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Beginning this week, PennDOT will close I-95 South between the Vine Street Expressway and the Columbus Boulevard on-ramp overnight from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. for more than a month as work on a $329 million highway cap project continues—drivers will be detoured via the Vine Street Expressway, Callowhill Street, and Columbus Boulevard with full re-openings expected on July 18.  Metro Philadelphia
