ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Police said that up to 20 SEPTA buses caught fire at the Roberts Yard in Nicetown-Tioga Thursday morning; firefighters later upgraded the blaze to a three-alarm fire — no injuries were reported.  WHYY

CRIME NEWS

  • On Sunday, June 1, ICE agents raided a Norristown home—detaining José and Victor and forcing family members to show IDs at gunpoint while leaving Ana worried about her daughters—while Montgomery County officials expressed support for immigrants by urging commissioners to pass a welcoming act and train county workers on handling ICE interactions.  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Upper Darby School District planned six solar projects at its schools using state grants and expected federal tax credits. A House budget bill would end the credits—forcing the district to meet impossible timelines and lose about one-third of its projected savings, which may delay or cancel the projects.  WHYY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Friends of the Wissahickon reminded park visitors that Wissahickon Park is wild after multiple reports of coyotes, including a daytime encounter near Cresheim Creek that led a hiker to call the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Neighbors have noticed more coyote activity recently and officials advise keeping dogs on a leash (as the animals may be foraging for their young) to ensure safety.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dozens of Philadelphia VA workers gathered Thursday outside the Cpl. Michael J. Crescenz Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center—chanting 'Save our jobs, save our vets' as they protested cuts to their union contract and benefits amid federal plans to downsize. Union leaders said the rally reflected deep concern after reduced union dues led to a drop in membership and weakened worker protections.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia City Council approved a plan to buy solar energy from a planned farm in Clearfield County—this purchase will supply 5% of the power for municipal buildings and raise the city's solar mix to 30% as part of its renewable goal by 2030. The Abes Run project is expected to come online mid-2026, although pending solar tax credit cuts could affect costs.  WHYY
  • After nearly two full days of negotiations, Philadelphia City Council gave preliminary approval to a $6.8 billion city budget that includes wage and business tax cuts plus an $800 million bond for Mayor Parker’s H.O.M.E. housing plan, which aims to create or preserve 30,000 housing units—Council will hold a final vote on June 12 to resolve remaining oversight and business tax break issues.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

  • The documentary Caregiving made by Bradley Cooper will premiere on PBS June 24 and will be free to watch on the PBS app—this film shows the real struggles of caregivers as they manage health care challenges.
