CRIME NEWS

  • Philadelphia police are investigating the drowning of 19‐month‐old Sy’vir Hill in a Harrowgate foster home on April 15 after his caregiver—already tending to six children, including three under age four—left him unattended to use the microwave.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Just before 10 a.m. on Friday, police said a man assaulted a fire lieutenant and barricaded himself in a home on the 7100 block of Jackson Street in Tacony—SWAT officers have secured the scene and the lieutenant’s condition remains unknown.  KYW Newsradio

  • KYW Newsradio marks its 60th anniversary by looking back at six decades of local news that covered major events such as disasters—like the Three Mile Island incident—and historic trials in the Delaware Valley.   • Oshunbumi Fernandez-West leads Philly’s Odunde Festival—an African American street celebration that started 50 years ago—and she focuses on teaching young people business skills to keep the tradition alive. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Aqua Pennsylvania and American Water are working to remove toxic PFAS chemicals from drinking water as the EPA proposed extending compliance to 2031 and easing some limits; Aqua said it will install new treatment systems by 2027 + American Water is building filters at key locations and expects systems to be up soon. The companies serve hundreds of thousands and plan to meet the updated standards to help protect local health.  WHYY

  • Officials say that SEPTA might cut the Paoli/Thorndale train line and four bus routes that serve Narberth and Lower Merion, which could hurt the walkable downtown areas. Local leaders warn that without these transit options—key to community growth—residents may face more traffic and fewer choices.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia city council may soon impose a $2,000 fine on dog owners whose pets enter animal–free zones in public parks, with new signs to mark areas like playgrounds and recreation centers.   • Philadelphia will soon see the opening of five new Japanese restaurants, including Nakama near the Convention Center, Newsroom Philly in Northern Liberties, Kissho House and Dancerobot in Rittenhouse, and Uchi in a high-rise.
