  • Philadelphia City Council approved a resolution on Thursday to transfer the title of the one-acre Summer Winter Community Garden to the Neighborhood Gardens Trust so local gardeners can manage the space and keep it safe from development. Community members will tend the garden—located at 33rd and Race Streets—that supplies produce and learning opportunities to local residents.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Thank You Thank You, its roastery Poem Roasting, and Second District Brewing joined forces to brew a limited edition watermelon-washed coffee sour beer called Face Your Dreams. The five-barrel batch will be on tap at Second District and sister bars for about three weeks —it retails for $3.25 to $7.50 per pour— and marks the coffee shop’s first beer collaboration.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Germantown welcomes locals to explore its parks and sites as the Green Space Stamp Rally returns until June 21. Participants can pick up passport books at Historic Germantown's headquarters—5501 Germantown Ave—and visit 18 stops to collect stamps and answer scavenger hunt questions for a chance to win prizes on a first-come, first-served basis.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Philadelphia Zoo opened Flamingo Cove on Saturday, June 14 — a new outdoor aviary that now houses Caribbean flamingos and 14 new African greater flamingos for the first time in nearly 50 years. The renovated habitat features a pool for wading and nesting islands that support future breeding.  Metro Philadelphia

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker celebrated the passage of her second city budget and H.O.M.E. plan when City Council approved a spending-and-tax measure and a plan to borrow $800 million for affordable housing on June 12 at City Hall — the $13.4 billion budget funded block cleaning, extended schooling and a wellness system to fight Kensington’s opioid crisis — while business tax cuts and a long-term plan for SEPTA were also approved.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia City Council passed two bills on Thursday that help renters manage upfront costs—one bill lets tenants pay a portion of large security deposits in installments and the other creates an anti-displacement fund to assist those forced from unsafe homes. Both bills will take effect 90 days after becoming law.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. criticized Philadelphia vaccine expert Paul Offit on Fox News for a supposed financial conflict when Offit voted on adding the rotavirus vaccine while on an advisory panel (he left the panel years before the vote) and Offit denied the claim, saying that saving lives was his goal.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Luka Krizanac, a 29-year-old man from Switzerland, received a rare double hand transplant at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania last fall and has since begun to regain basic abilities like writing and pouring coffee — doctors report his progress shows improved nerve connection and restored function. His recovery continues with regular physical therapy as he adapts to his new hands.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • TF Cornerstone and its partner Alterra Property Group plan to turn the Wanamaker Building into 600 loft-style apartments while keeping some office and store spaces; they will use flexible zoning and a 10-year tax break + keep the Crystal Tea Room open for events. The developers will build units from studios to three bedrooms and fix design challenges by taking out a steel platform to let in more light + show Philadelphia’s promise for modern living.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
