EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Masterman students said SEPTA’s planned service cuts will harm education and safety for over 50,000 student riders in Philadelphia as a $213 million funding crisis forces a reduction in bus routes and rail lines. They warned that these changes will make students walk or bike in bad weather and lead to delays — urging Gov. Shapiro to maintain full transit funding. The Philadelphia Inquirer
- ➤ Fifty ninth-graders from the School of the Future and Horace Howard Furness High School will join the new Academy at Penn this summer to receive college and career support over four years. Led by Foundations, Inc. with $8 million in funding, the program offers personalized mentoring, internships, and counseling — aiming to boost opportunities for first-generation college students. WHYY
- ➤ Temple University faces a $19 million deficit for fiscal 2025 and a projected $60 million gap for fiscal 2026—forcing position cuts through retirements, resignations and possible layoffs set to begin after July 1. President John Fry said the moves aim to lower costs and boost enrollment as rising expenses and flat state funding continue to pressure the school. The Philadelphia Inquirer
- ➤ Officials at Universal Vare Charter School in South Philadelphia said the school will not enroll new fifth graders this fall as its charter expires next year — the decision comes amid declining enrollment and changing district policies — leaving fewer than 100 students expected next year. A news conference is scheduled for Thursday to discuss the decision with input from state lawmakers. The Philadelphia Inquirer
