COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Philadelphia advocacy groups and local Iranian Americans felt deep unease after the U.S. bombed three key Iranian nuclear sites on Saturday, leaving families in Iran without word and sparking worry at home. More than a dozen groups—Philly Iranians and Jewish Voice for Peace among them—held protests in Center City and organized an emotional gathering in Washington Square on Sunday to demand an end to war.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities, with FBI & local investigators leading the probe, are seeking two men who robbed a Brinks armored truck near a Santander Bank branch on Castor Avenue in Port Richmond Saturday morning after masked suspects stole money and a firearm before fleeing in a black Hyundai.  KYW Newsradio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Paula Marincola, in one of her final acts as director, moved the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage into a new partnership with the Barnes Foundation at 1608 Walnut St—Barnes will handle the business operations and the staff will become Barnes employees. Barnes Executive Director Thom Collins said the change will support new cultural programs while the grant process will remain separate and Marincola will step down in October.  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Temple University professor, Timothy Welbeck—also a hip-hop artist—created a course titled 'Kendrick Lamar and the Morale of M.A.A.D City' that studies Lamar’s life, songs and cultural impact from an Afrocentric view and will start this fall. The course will include guest speakers from the music industry while Lamar continues touring with SZA.  WHYY
  • Temple University alumnus Gary Scales completed a doctoral study that shows gas stations use senses to sell products that ease drivers’ fears instead of relying on gas sales. He examined stations from 1910 to 1999 and found that convenience items like coffee and cigarettes drove profits — not the fuel itself.  KYW Newsradio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The PA House Committee advanced a bill that would require hotels to install panic buttons for workers to protect them from sexual violence and harassment—on a party-line vote. The bill will move to the House Rules Committee for further consideration.  KYW Newsradio

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Phillies and Mets split wins 10-2 on Friday and 11-4 on Saturday in a three-game series for first place in the NL East, and game three was held Sunday at 7:10 p.m. on ESPN—serving as the decider for the season series—while both teams aimed to secure the top spot.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Phillies beat the Mets 7-1 on June 22 at Citizens Bank Park—Jesus Luzardo pitched 6.2 innings with seven strikeouts—and the team regained its control in the NL East. The win marked the Phillies’ 17th series win in 25 series, and they will travel to Houston on Tuesday to face the Astros.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Phillies manager Rob Thomson reshuffled the starting rotation ahead of upcoming road trips to the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves, with Ranger Suárez to start Tuesday, Zack Wheeler on Wednesday, and Cristopher Sánchez on Thursday. Michael Mercado was optioned to AAA and replaced by Alan Rangel in the bullpen—part of efforts to balance the left-handed pitchers.  Metro Philadelphia
