  • Fox 29 investigative reporter Jeff Cole retires today after 25 years of breaking major political scandals in Philadelphia — the 67-year-old plans to sell his Delaware County home and return to New England where he may work part time in journalism.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Philadelphia homicide detective Donald Suchinsky was sentenced to 6 1/2 to 13 years in prison Thursday—he was convicted of sexually assaulting a grieving mother and the sister of another murder victim, an act that undermined public trust in Philadelphia police.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • The FBI released a new poster to help find Byshere Smith (24), who was accused of fatally shooting 21-year-old As Saadiq Abdul-Aziz on the 2200 block of South 23rd Street on June 26th; he is considered armed and dangerous.  KYW Newsradio
  • 28-year-old Gerelys Sanchez-Reyes, accused of fatally stabbing a 21-year-old woman and stuffing her body in a futon in Northeast Philly in April, was caught in Madrid (with help from U.S. Marshals) and now awaits extradition to face murder charges.  KYW Newsradio
  • Philadelphia police investigated a fatal shooting at a Tacony 7-Eleven just after 7 a.m. Thursday—reports indicate the victim was shot in the head during an argument and police later surrounded a nearby house where the possible suspect barricaded himself.  KYW Newsradio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fresh water now flows permanently in the Manayunk Canal after a three-year, $16 million project reconnected it to the Schuylkill River—engineers say the new gate has improved water quality and revived wildlife that had long been absent.  KYW Newsradio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SEPTA’s board approved a doomsday budget that cuts service by 45% and raises fares by 21.5% because it faces a $213 million deficit — officials warned the cuts were needed — as state lawmakers debate more transit funding. If funds are not provided, SEPTA will cut five regional rail lines and 56 bus routes with the first bus cuts coming in August — trains will then end stops at 9 p.m. daily — which will reduce options for riders.  KYW Newsradio
  • SEPTA's board approved a budget that may cut 45% of its services if the $213 million deficit is not overcome, with changes starting August 24. The cuts will affect bus, subway and rail services—32 bus routes will be eliminated, 16 shortened and further service and fare reductions are planned.  WHYY
  • Philadelphia is building its first new police station in 20 years at 21st and Diamond streets in North Philadelphia—its $40 million North Central Public Safety Building will house a police station and a Police Athletic League center with a gymnasium, classrooms, and a community room. The revised plan, which added community input after previous opposition, will have a groundbreaking ceremony in July and finish construction in fall.  WHYY
