COMMUNITY NEWS

  • RiverFest 2025 will be held on July 13 at Glen Foerd, a historic estate in Northeast Philadelphia, with a rain date of July 27 and will feature boating on Poquessing Creek and the Delaware River, boat races with 6 to 12 competitors, and hands-on environmental and arts activities with local vendors and music. Guided tours of the mansion will be offered at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.—the free event supports ongoing environmental education at the park.  Metro Philadelphia

CULTURE NEWS

  • Philadelphia will celebrate the Fourth of July on July 4 with fireworks displays and live events at several venues including Pleasant Hill Park—where fun activities start at 5 p.m. and fireworks light up the sky at 9:30 p.m. Families and visitors will have access to concerts, food trucks, and special viewing experiences across the city.  Metro Philadelphia

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Committee of Seventy now offers Spanish and Chinese versions of its How Philly Works guide to help newcomers understand city services. Committee President Lauren Cristella said a French version and additional guides on the school district, state government and the city’s ward system for elections will be released soon — a move to boost civic engagement.  KYW Newsradio
  • Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker posted a video on social media Saturday saying the city's wage offer to District Council 33 — which represents 9,000 city workers — is fair and fiscally responsible, noting that wage increases would total 12% when combined with last year's 5% raise. Union officials say they will rally Monday and may strike at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday if no deal is reached.  WHYY
  • The SEPTA Board approved its Fiscal Year 2026 Operating Budget today, which will cut nearly half the transit service and raise fares by more than 20% starting on Sept. 1, with over 30 bus routes eliminated beginning on Aug. 24. Additional cuts—such as ending five Regional Rail lines and adding a 9 p.m. rail curfew on Jan. 1—will impact nearly 200,000 weekday riders and affect transit for 67 schools serving 55,000 students.  Metro Philadelphia

HEALTH NEWS

  • Former Crozer Health patients have struggled to obtain their medical records since the system closed. Delaware County Health Department is hosting a summer series at local senior centers in June and July to help seniors get both digital and paper copies of their records + offer guidance on insurance and immunizations.  WHYY

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Flyers traded picks and chose defenseman Carter Amico at No. 38 in the second round — he played 17 games after breaking his kneecap and said he will return next week. They also picked forward Jack Murtagh and right winger Shane Vansaghi — both expected to add depth for the season.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • The Philadelphia Union kept a clean sheet against Chicago Fire and remain atop the Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield with an 11-match unbeaten streak. They will face the Columbus Crew today at Lower.com Field at 6:00 p.m.—hoping to extend their run.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Flyers drafted winger Porter Martone at No. 6 and center Jack Nesbitt at No. 12 in the first round to fill team needs and add size — both players must improve their skating. GM Danny Brière said Martone brings leadership and Nesbitt’s grit may help him earn a key role in upcoming games.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
