ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A two-alarm fire erupted early Friday morning at the historic Art Alliance building on Rittenhouse Square—firefighters responded at 3:19 a.m. and had the blaze under control by 5:36 a.m. while one firefighter was injured. Officials have not yet identified the cause or determined the full extent of the damage.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CRIME NEWS

  • Police are investigating a shooting in West Philadelphia near 61st and Market streets around 1 a.m. Friday when a suspect fired multiple shots into a Buick, killing a 26-year-old man and critically wounding a 32-year-old woman while two other women were unharmed; the shooter was last seen driving a red or burgundy four-door sedan.  KYW Newsradio
  • On Friday evening, police in Fairhill fatally shot a 40-year-old man on the 2900 block of North Lawrence Street after he fired at officers during a domestic incident call; no one else was injured even though a police car, windows, and a nearby home were hit by gunfire, and investigators are looking into the incident.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia officials said that overnight multiple fires at trash collection sites were quickly extinguished with no injuries reported — investigators are looking into the cause amid a sanitation workers strike and warn that any intentional arson will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia police are investigating the dumping of 15-year-old Rasheid Lynch's body in a Mayfair driveway around 6 p.m. Thursday near Revere and Robbins streets — the teen suffered gunshot wounds to his chest, shoulder and lower back, and a witness reported a white vehicle pushed his body from a car.  KYW Newsradio
  • Two sanitation workers on strike were hit by a drunk driver during a protest outside a sanitation center in Port Richmond on Thursday at 11:30 p.m.—the pregnant woman was treated and released while the man remains in critical condition, and the driver fled before being arrested with a male passenger held as well.  KYW Newsradio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Philadelphia’s only surviving colonial tavern, A Man Full of Trouble, first opened in 1759 and served beer and cider during the Revolutionary War to spark public debate about freedom. Dan Wheeler restored the building last December and now runs a small museum that shows how bar culture helped shape early American ideas of democracy—an important legacy in the city.  WHYY

  • Philadelphia's Fourth of July events saw striking AFSCME District Council 33 workers protest in parades & ceremonies for higher wages. Mayor Cherelle Parker pledged a fair deal & city officials will resume contract talks today.  WHYY
  • Independence Day celebrations took place on Friday along Market Street as Philadelphia locals and tourists joined parades while striking municipal workers protested near City Hall. LL Cool J and Jazmine Sullivan canceled their Wawa Welcome America concert—standing with the striking workers—as the union urged the city to reach a fair wage deal.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia officials said that yesterday's Fourth of July celebrations went on safely despite a blue-collar city worker strike — Police Commissioner Bethel explained extra security covered parades, concerts and games — while road closures and transit detours were put in place.  KYW Newsradio
