CRIME NEWS

  • Eight people were shot around 3:50 a.m. at 7 Elements Restaurant Bar and Lounge in South Philadelphia, and two are in critical condition while police review surveillance video — suspect identities have not been released.  WHYY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia now marks sites like Independence Hall but was built after many old buildings were torn down to clear space for a unified historical area. Cultural historian Francesca Russello Ammon and park ranger Luke Hopely said the park—authorized by Congress in 1948—replaced a vibrant commercial district with a more focused monument to America’s past.  WHYY
  • A new vinyl club started at the Free Library’s Vine Street Main Branch where community members meet every last Wednesday of the month for themed record listening sessions such as a June event honoring African American Music Appreciation Month. The club meets from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and may extend its time—librarians report strong interest from attendees.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday at the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Mayor Cherelle Parker refused to yield amid the city workers strike and warned that protecting fiscal stability might cost her reelection—she appealed directly to DC 33 members and questioned union leadership for not sharing accurate information—stressing that the city’s finances must remain secure.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • AFSCME DC 47, a union for city workers, is holding a strike authorization vote with three in-person voting sessions until July 15 and may strike when its contract extension ends in mid-July if members approve. Union leaders have not clearly signaled plans to join blue collar colleagues on the picket line—voting results will decide their next steps.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

  • On Saturday, the Phillies tied their series with a win of five to one over the Reds as Ranger Suárez pitched five innings with one run allowed and teammates Edmundo Sosa, Alec Bohm, and Kyle Schwarber each hit a home run—boosting the team’s momentum.
