CRIME NEWS

  • Police say shots were fired around 1:40 a.m. Sunday at a large gathering along the 2200 block of Edgely Street near Diamond Street—officers broke up the crowd and found about 20 shell casings while three people were injured and taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.  KYW Newsradio
  • Police say a friend of his girlfriend fired a gun, shooting a 24-year-old man in the shoulder at 2:30 a.m. near a corner store on 55th Street—Wyalusing Avenue on Sunday as the man flagged down officers who took him to a hospital while police search for the woman linked to the domestic dispute.  KYW Newsradio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Philadelphia streets have seen growing trash piles as a week-old strike by sanitation workers and other DC33 members has forced residents to carry their own garbage to over 60 drop-off sites. Social media users have posted memes and critiques, questioning Mayor Parker's decisions & the city's service hierarchy as the strike continues.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Striking union members from DC 33 will set up over a dozen picket locations Sunday near City Hall, Philadelphia International Airport, police headquarters and several sanitation centers as contract talks with the city continue. The union's 9,000 workers, including sanitation, airport and prison staff, claim they have long been underpaid and are seeking better wages in a new contract.  KYW Newsradio

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study from the University of Pennsylvania shows that SIDS deaths have declined since the Federal Safe to Sleep Campaign began but many still do not know that babies sleep most safely on their backs—women under 50 are more aware of this tip than men over 50 and experts warn that smoking near infants increases the risk.  KYW Newsradio
  • Upenn researchers modified the fungus Aspergillus flavus—once linked to King Tut’s curse—to test its ability to kill leukemia cells. Lab tests showed the compound boosted cancer cell killing 100-fold, and further studies will determine if it can lead to a new therapy.  WHYY

  • Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler delivered a dominant complete game on May 29th in a 3-1 win over the Reds—striking out 12 batters and retiring 27 in a row—and became the first Phillies starter since Cliff Lee in April 2013 to pitch 8 innings without a walk.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia Union lost 1-0 to Nashville SC on Saturday night after a late penalty in the 101st minute — it marked their second straight loss under coach Bradley Carnell.   • VJ Edgecombe made his Summer League debut on June 25 in Salt Lake City – scoring 28 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as the Sixers lost 93-89 to the Utah Jazz. He showed skill and speed in his first test against Ace Bailey that impressed the team despite the close loss.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Philadelphia Phillies’ president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski, is planning moves at the upcoming trade deadline and will not trade star prospect Andrew Painter who is soon to play in the big leagues. Other prospects like Justin Crawford, Aidan Miller, Mick Abel, Eduardi Tait and Aroon Escobar may be traded as the team boosts its roster for a playoff run—each move shows their focus on blending young talent with proven skills.  Metro Philadelphia
