CRIME NEWS

  • On July 5, police said eight people were wounded in a mass shooting outside 7 Elements bar early morning when an argument escalated into a knife fight and a security guard fired his weapon — officers quickly responded by transporting four victims by ambulance and four by private vehicle to nearby hospitals where all are in stable condition.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia police responded to a mass shooting in Grays Ferry on the 1500 block of South Etting Street just before 1 a.m. Monday that left three people dead and 10 injured, and investigators are reviewing links to weekend arrests.  WHYY
  • Police arrested 28-year-old Ariza Giansteban in New Jersey on Saturday after he shot a Philadelphia school safety officer during a June 29 road rage incident on I-95—he fled east on Girard Avenue near Dave and Buster’s.  KYW Newsradio
  • ICE agents arrested five Guatemalan men at a home near 20th and Morris in South Philadelphia on Sunday, and a neighbor’s video shows officers handling two men while a nearby resident yelled at agents—an action that local group Juntos said reflects a pattern of harsh ICE tactics.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Early Monday morning, gunfire erupted in Grays Ferry when 12 people were shot—3 died and 9 were wounded—and police said the incident marked Philadelphia's second mass shooting in three days.  KYW Newsradio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Philadelphia's municipal workers union strike reached its sixth day on Sunday after talks stalled and led to disrupted trash collection and changes in July 4 events, with headliners canceling performances in support of the picket lines. City officials said essential services continued and urged residents to use dumpsters properly—while a judge ordered some Medical Examiner staff back to work—despite reports of minor trash fires at collection sites.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker did not reach a deal with DC 33 union leaders after seven days of strike, and trash has piled on streets while garbage pickup remains on hold. The city set up 60 drop-off sites that operate from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. Monday to Saturday—residents can bring up to eight bags on their assigned day.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
