CRIME NEWS

  • Philadelphia police identified three men killed in a mass shooting early Monday morning in Grays Ferry — video footage was released to help identify three suspects while nine others, including a 19-year-old in critical condition, were injured.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Maurice Hill, convicted of shooting six Philadelphia police officers during a standoff in Nicetown-Tioga six years ago, was sentenced on Thursday to 120—240 years in prison and will spend the rest of his life behind bars.  KYW Newsradio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Philadelphia-based artist Nicolo Gentile created the art installation 'Bar None'—using etched steel barricades and colored acrylic panels to honor protests and pride—on display at Maja Park on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway as part of The 2025 Oval and Parkway to Park Festival; an opening event will be held on Aug. 14 at Park Towne Place’s Oar Pub and the piece will remain until Oct. 26.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philly venues will host Bastille Day events on July 13 and 14 that feature French food, live music and games to celebrate the holiday. The festivities include a block party on South Street at The Good King Tavern, a family picnic at FDR Park with Alliance Française and pop-up events at Café Click, Forsythia and Sofitel offering French-made treats.  Metro Philadelphia

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On July 9, AFSCME District Council 33 leaders and Mayor Cherelle Parker reached a tentative contract that ended a strike which had halted trash pickup and other city services. About 9,000 union employees will return to work during the ratification process while curbside collection will resume Monday — residents must use sanitation centers for garbage disposal in the meantime.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The Parker administration reached a tentative agreement with AFSCME District Council 33 that ended the nine-thousand-strong municipal workers' strike, and the deal will raise union pay by 14 percent over four years if ratified—it includes a three-year contract plus a one-year extension agreed last fall.  Metro Philadelphia

HEALTH NEWS

  • Starting this fall, pregnant patients in Philadelphia will give birth at the new Temple Women & Families Hospital near Juniata Park, which will open Sept. 3 and offer care for mothers & newborns. Labor and delivery services at the main campus will end around that time.  WHYY
  • Penn Medicine will unveil its new mobile mammogram van this weekend at the Community Health Fair in West Philadelphia, held at the Community of Compassion CDC at the corner of 62nd and Cedar Avenue. The van features hospital-like 3D mammogram equipment and decorations with flowers & butterflies, and it will offer breast cancer and other health screenings to reach underserved communities.  KYW Newsradio
