COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new 10-acre park now opens along the Delaware River in Bridesburg, fulfilling the long-held vision of former Congressman Robert Borski. Developed with $7 million in public & private funds, the park was dedicated Friday and will host community events like yoga and outdoor movie nights through November.  KYW Newsradio

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 3, a 16-year-old in Mayfair allegedly shot 15-year-old Rashied Lynch along Revere Street — wounding him in the neck, chest, and shoulder — after the two, who knew each other from school, met up, and the suspect later turned himself in on murder, robbery, and gun charges.  KYW Newsradio
  • Neighbors have lived in fear since Monday’s deadly mass shooting in Grays Ferry which killed three and injured nine—at a town hall meeting on Thursday they urged the city to act to curb gun violence.  KYW Newsradio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Philadelphia Clef Club is undergoing a $4.5 million renovation to upgrade its education facilities, add a state-of-the-art recording studio, and update its music program. About $2 million will come from the William Penn Foundation—the rest will be provided by state, city, and private donors.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Philadelphia’s largest municipal union reached a tentative agreement with the city to return roughly 9,000 workers after a week-long strike, with the contract retroactive to July 1 and a ratification vote set to begin early next week at its West Philadelphia headquarters. The agreement provides 3% annual wage raises, a one-time full-time bonus of $1,500, revised healthcare contributions, and expanded sick and bereavement leave policies — details the union says set a new standard for working conditions.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • On Friday afternoon, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency reported that 911 systems statewide experienced intermittent outages and advised people to call their local 911 centers using nonemergency lines if 911 did not work—Philadelphia police urged residents to continue dialing 911 for real emergencies. Officials said experts were working to restore full service.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

HEALTH NEWS

  • Temple Health will delay opening its new women’s hospital in Crescentville to Sept. 3 to give staff extra time for training — labor and delivery services will stay at the main campus for now. The system will handle emergencies at the main campus, which has a Level 1 trauma center.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

  • Since hiring director Preston Mattingly in 2021, the Phillies’ farm system has strengthened with prospects like Keaton Anthony and Felix Reyes posting strong numbers—officials now eye small moves ahead of the trade deadline.
