SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ On July 13, the Phillies' left-handed starter, Cristopher Sanchez, pitched 7.1 innings at Petco Park against the Padres and allowed six hits and one earned run to secure a 2-1 win in his final start of the first half. The Phillies now hold a 55-41 record—leading the National League East—and the team will use this momentum to prepare for the upcoming trade deadline. Metro Philadelphia
- ➤ The Philadelphia Union reclaimed the top MLS spot with a 2-0 win over the New York Red Bulls at Subaru Park on Saturday when Indiana Vassilev and club record-signing Bruno Damiani scored in the first half. The win marked the team's 15th game without a loss and came with a league-leading clean sheet as they prepare to face CF Montreal on Wednesday. Metro Philadelphia
- ➤ The Philadelphia Phillies selected right-handed pitcher Gage Wood as the No. 26 overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft on Sunday night. Wood became the club’s first college first rounder since Brian Barber and the first college pitcher since Aaron Nola—he is noted for a no-hitter in the College World Series and a 4-1 record with 69 strikeouts in 37.2 innings at Arkansas. Metro Philadelphia
- ➤ The Phillies picked Iowa left-hander Cade Obermueller with the 63rd pick in the 2025 MLB draft to build their young team (he did not sign with the Rangers last year). Baseball America said he throws a fastball and slider but his control is weak, which might move him to the bullpen (a change that could adjust his role). Metro Philadelphia
- ➤ Philadelphia Phillies' All-Star Kyle Schwarber will play in the MLB All-Star game in Atlanta on July 15 while teammate Zack Wheeler sits out to focus on the season — his selection makes Schwarber the only active All-Star for the club. Fans can enjoy the Home Run Derby tonight at 8 p.m. EST — and local festivities including a free event at Dilworth Park and an All-Star Declaration Bus tour to celebrate the game. Metro Philadelphia
