Good morning, Philadelphia. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 18th of July.

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Philadelphia police officer Mark Dial was sentenced Thursday to 9½ months to two years for his voluntary manslaughter conviction in the 2023 killing of Eddie Irizarry in Kensington—he was immediately paroled after serving about 10 months, a decision that drew condemnation from Irizarry’s family and District Attorney Larry Krasner.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Police are asking for help to identify the gunman who fatally shot Donald Jeffers on July 6 in North Philly as surveillance footage shows a suspect in a purple jubba, black ski mask, and black Pittsburgh Pirates cap; his getaway driver, Aaron Taylor, was charged with conspiracy to commit murder — authorities offer a $20,000 reward for tips.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia police are asking residents to help identify two young men seen on store camera footage who were among at least six shooters at a Grays Ferry block party over the Fourth of July weekend that left three dead and nine injured—authorities are offering a $20,000 reward for information on each homicide.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia police charged 20-year-old Patrick Suarez with murder after he shot and killed 49-year-old Michael Neumann in Port Richmond on the 2900 block of Salmon Street early Tuesday—surveillance footage and a quick scooter sighting in Kensington led to his arrest on Wednesday.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

HEALTH NEWS

  • A CHOP study found that only 35% of eligible infants received Beyfortus when it first became available to prevent severe RSV illness. The study reported lower uptake among publicly insured, Black infants and those from low-income neighborhoods—data that may help guide efforts to boost protection.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Phillies’ left-handed reliever Tanner Banks has become a key part of the team since Jose Alvarado’s suspension on May 18 — he has pitched 20.1 innings without walking a batter while recording 18 strikeouts and a 2.21 ERA. The Phillies plan to get extra bullpen help at the deadline as Banks continues to play an important high-pressure role.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Kyle Schwarber hit three homers in a historic swing-off during an All-Star game that gave the National League the lead and earned him the first All-Star MVP for a designated hitter—he now leads the Phillies in power as contract talks are set for the off-season before his free agency at season’s end.  Metro Philadelphia
