CRIME NEWS

  • Former police officer Mark Dial was sentenced to nine-and-a-half months to two years in prison for voluntary manslaughter in the 2023 killing of Eddie Irizarry Jr—District Attorney Larry Krasner and Irizarry’s family expressed deep disappointment with the lenient punishment that allowed immediate parole and ended his future service as an officer.  Metro Philadelphia
  • A 45-year-old woman hanged herself in her cell at Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center on Thursday morning when a guard and a nurse found her around 9 a.m.; she had been held since May 21 on assault charges (she is the second person to die in the jail system this year) and (a man died on March 8 after a fatal heart attack at another facility).  The Philadelphia Inquirer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Philadelphia Zoo will host its second annual 'Zoo Done It' on Saturday, Aug. 2 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Participants will explore the Zoo grounds during this adults-only scavenger hunt in partnership with Without a Cue Productions and may win a private tour of The Solitude—a historic site known for its haunted past.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia’s Rocky Bus Tour now adds a new stop—a lunch break and storytelling session at Pat’s King of Steaks in the Italian Market that deepens the tour’s Philly flavor. The tour runs every Saturday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and ticket holders receive a $5 meal discount at the new stop.  Metro Philadelphia

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In June, Philadelphia City Council considered the Safe Healthy Homes Act where a bill to create a tenant relocation fund was signed while proposals to strengthen tenant rights and allow proactive rental inspections stalled. Research shows that current rental laws do not improve renters' health while inspections like those in Rochester reduced code violations—leaving legislators to decide if changes are needed.  Metro Philadelphia

SPORTS NEWS

  • On July 18, the Phillies lost 6-5 to the Angels at Citizens Bank Park in South Philly. Home runs by Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper gave Philadelphia an early lead but the Angels rallied as pitcher Tanner Banks struggled and closer Kenley Jansen earned his 17th save.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philadelphia Eagles received their Super Bowl LIX Championship Rings Friday night from Jason of Beverly Hills to mark their 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs—this event comes ahead of training camp, which begins on July 22 at the NovaCare Complex in South Philadelphia.  Metro Philadelphia
