CRIME NEWS

  • On Sunday around 3:15 a.m., police searched for two Black males who allegedly stole about 40 boxes of meat from a tractor-trailer behind a business on the 9700 block of Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia — eight boxes were later recovered before the suspects fled in Nissan vehicles.  KYW Newsradio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kensington’s Peace Park opened Sunday at 3200 Potter St.—the park has a sculpture made from guns taken in buyback events last year. The artwork, created with help from Mural Arts, RAWtools and local teens, lights up every 11 minutes to show the time between gun deaths.  WHYY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Philadelphia’s School District is planning changes to its school buildings and will release a draft plan in August with final decisions by December — the process may close, upgrade, or keep over 300 schools. Community members have voiced concerns over the process and more in-person sessions are set this week to gather feedback.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mexican consulate in Philadelphia supports 192,500 Mexican residents in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and southern New Jersey by offering free legal aid and consular programs like 'Know Your Rights' to help immigrants facing ICE raids. It provided help on July 9 when ICE detained 14 people near Norristown—assisting those in custody to keep their rights and connect with legal help.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Philadelphia's largest blue-collar union District Council 33 is expected to announce today its vote on a tentative three-year city contract reached earlier this month (involving roughly 9,000 members) that would raise wages by 9% (despite union leader Greg Boulware’s earlier displeasure with the deal).  KYW Newsradio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Delaware County is finalizing new EMS contracts as townships that once relied on Crozer are joining together to speed up emergency care—ambulances now give blood transfusions to help gunshot victims during long rides to hospitals. Health officials plan to open two micro-hospitals soon and are reviewing proposals for a mental health crisis center to ease pressure on crowded emergency departments.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

  • On Sunday, Philadelphia hosted the first international chess tournament through the Portal — a 3.5-ton video art installation moved from Love Park to City Hall’s courtyard — linking local players with opponents from Poland, Dublin and Vilnius.
