CRIME NEWS

  • A Philadelphia man, Michael Vahey, pleaded guilty to killing doctor Barbara Friedes when he struck her with his car in a Center City bike lane last year and was sentenced to a minimum of six years and up to 20 years in prison—police said his blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit.  WHYY
  • Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Judge Jennifer Schultz reversed David Dickson’s 1995 conviction—he served 33 years on false testimony and has now entered an Alford plea for third-degree murder and robbery that allows his immediate release with eight years on probation.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • A 27-year-old Philadelphia man—accused of attacking and taunting homeless people near the Convention Center on July 4 while friends recorded his actions for social media—has been charged with simple assault, reckless endangerment and harassment.  KYW Newsradio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Philadelphia nonprofits Clean Air Council, Communities for a Better Environment & Natural Resources Defense Council filed a lawsuit asking a federal judge to force the EPA to regulate hydrogen fluoride used at refineries because it poses serious health risks. The groups point to past leaks and aging refinery equipment, arguing that new rules must be set soon to prevent a potential disaster.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ICE reportedly set a 3,000 arrests‐a‐day quota in late May that doubled daily arrests—from 26 to 51 per day—across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware and led to increased detentions of immigrants without criminal records, including five people taken in South Philadelphia after the July 4 weekend.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Councilmember Jamie Gauthier is urging the city to buy developer James Levin’s portfolio of affordable rental units to prevent the displacement of over 3,000 renters who rely on 925 units—she warned that without a deal, many may lose their homes when rents turn market rate. She has scheduled stakeholder meetings next month and has already discussed the matter with Mayor Parker's team to secure a competitive bid under a 45-day tenant matching law.  WHYY
  • A new report from the EPA Office of Inspector General said the agency did not collect enough information to verify that state-run lead paint programs protect kids from lead poisoning. The report recommended that the EPA improve oversight measures—steps that are expected to be implemented soon to keep communities safe.  WHYY
