  • Hospitality workers from UNITE HERE Local 274 picketed outside the Sheraton on Wednesday after working without a contract for over a year, demanding fair wages and proper staffing. They call for a wage increase to $30 an hour ahead of major events planned for America’s 250th anniversary next year—an effort backed by local councilmembers.  WHYY
  • Jim’s South St. may raise its cheesesteak prices as the cost of beef has jumped by about $1 per pound and other expenses have soared since its reopening after a fire in 2024—restaurant president Ken Silver said he is absorbing the cost for now hoping prices drop after the summer season.  KYW Newsradio

CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery County prosecutors charge Charles Fulforth, 41, and Kelvin Roberts, 42, with first-degree murder and burglary after a December home invasion in Lower Merion in which the men mistakenly broke into the Gaudios' home while trying to steal guns from a nearby Bucks County address and shot 25-year-old Andrew Gaudio five times — a fatal back-of-head shot that a medical examiner said made the killing execution-style — while injuring his mother.  KYW Newsradio

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Barnes Foundation is licensing its Visual Experience Platform—VXP—to other institutions after it developed the tool during online learning to let students view art up close. The Penn Museum will use it for Deep Dig classes and lectures so students can examine ancient artifacts in 360-views.  WHYY
  • Scholar and photographer Ed Snyder will speak today at the Athenaeum about abandoned and forgotten cemeteries in Philadelphia — his talk covers recent findings from sites such as the Temple University burial ground and begins at 2 p.m. in the Busch Room with free entry for members and a $20 fee for nonmembers.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pennsylvania lawmakers plan to introduce the Officer Visibility Act to ban ICE agents from wearing masks during arrests—lawmakers say clear identification will help protect civil rights and reduce impersonation risks. ICE director Todd Lyons said the agency will continue to allow masks for officer safety, even as critics question the practice.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • On July 11 at 2 p.m., an operating system defect caused the statewide 911 outage detected at Delaware County Emergency Services Center, and a preliminary governor’s report ruled out a cyberattack. All 911 services were restored by midnight and Comtech Communications is investigating the issue—working with state officials.  KYW Newsradio
