CRIME NEWS

  • An ICE raid in West Norriton on July 16 led to the arrest of 14 undocumented workers from the Super Gigante market—family members and local business owners now face uncertainty as the detainees are held at a Philadelphia detention center.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • A Philadelphia corrections officer, Ivory Cousins, sprayed pepper in the face of a hurt inmate and kept him from getting care at Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility; she was sentenced on Thursday to five years in federal prison with two years probation for breaking his rights and falsifying a report.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • At a South Philly block party on July 7, more than 100 shots were fired, killing Jason Reese, 19, along with two others as 12 were shot and police have not made any arrests while his grieving mother says she still awaits answers—she wants to know who did it.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • A Philadelphia couple is suing two funeral homes — one based in Georgia and one in Philadelphia — after they discovered their late son’s brain in a box of his personal effects following his cremation last November. The lawsuit claims the companies mishandled his remains and seeks to prevent similar errors in the future.  KYW Newsradio
  • Police responded shortly before 9:40 p.m. on Thursday to a quadruple shooting at a graduation party on North Lambert Street in North Philadelphia where an 11-year-old boy, his 13-year-old sister, their 36-year-old mother, and a 45-year-old man were shot and taken to Temple University Hospital (all in critical condition).  The Philadelphia Inquirer

  • Philadelphia offers a full weekend of live music and cultural events. Locals can enjoy Philly Dance Day with free workshops tomorrow and test their skills at a Mario Kart 8 tournament today at Cira Green—other highlights include a Dave Matthews Band show in Camden and various free art, history, and food events nearby.  WHYY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SEPTA will cut 32 bus routes, shorten 16 routes and reduce service on 88 lines on August 24 if state funding is not approved, affecting 55,000 school district students. The transit agency is ramping up outreach today—installing signs at bus stops and alerting riders to a 21.5% fare hike, a hiring freeze in September and further cuts planned in January amid a $213 million budget gap.  KYW Newsradio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Temple University Hospital workers rallied outside the main campus on Broad Street after a July 13 incident when a man who left the emergency department was shot at, urging better safety measures because 66% of staff have experienced workplace violence—Temple said its safety protocols remain but police staffing has dropped from six to two. This demonstration highlights ongoing concerns about security in the hospital's busy area.  KYW Newsradio
