  • Rising beef costs have local cheesesteak shops in Philadelphia planning to raise their prices as federal data shows record high prices—with Jim’s South St. already increasing its cheesesteak from $11.49 to $13.49 due to a nearly 12% rise in ground beef prices.  KYW Newsradio

CRIME NEWS

  • Philadelphia police are investigating a string of burglaries in Fishtown—Vessel Coffee Collective was broken into by a masked man with tattoos on Thursday, and similar incidents at a warehouse and a van have led neighbors to ask for help identifying the suspect.  KYW Newsradio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wilder hosted its latest quarterly book dinner series this month with author Emma Copley Eisenberg — guests enjoyed a five-course meal featuring dishes inspired by her novel Housemates. The series supports charity and will return in September with author Leni Zumas.  Metro Philadelphia
  • Philly’s waterfront is set to host many events in August as part of the 'Make Summer Yours' initiative—featuring the ACANA Africa Festival on Aug. 3, multicultural festivals at Cherry Street Pier, music shows at Spruce Street Harbor Park, and fitness classes at Race Street Pier. Some events will run through Sept. 30 to offer locals an extended summer celebration.  Metro Philadelphia
  • The city renamed the 400 block of South Broad Street as Teddy Pendergrass Way during a ceremony held Saturday near the former Philadelphia International Records, where his early platinum albums were released. Mayor Parker and Councilmember Squilla joined fans in honoring his lasting musical legacy — a tribute now placed alongside Gamble and Huff Walk and Patti LaBelle Way.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

  • The School District of Philadelphia will begin its annual back-to-school bus tour on Monday to help families prepare for the new school year with free school supply backpacks, health services and fun activities. The tour will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—with stops at School of the Future on July 28, Fashion District on Aug. 1, Martin Luther King High School on Aug. 4, George Washington High School on Aug. 6, Citizen Bank Park on Aug. 9, Marcus Foster Memorial Stadium on Aug. 12 and Roosevelt Mall on Aug. 15.  Metro Philadelphia

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Westbound lanes on Market Street in Old City will be closed from Aug. 4 to Nov. 17 for a $16 million project that will narrow the road to one lane in each direction and add a bike lane, upgraded bus stops and a pedestrian plaza near the Tamanend statue—drivers going west will detour to Front, Arch and 6th streets while eastbound traffic remains open.  Metro Philadelphia

  • On July 26, the Eagles held their third practice on Military Appreciation Day at NovaCare Complex where Jihaad Campbell took first-team reps while Jalen Carter and Kenyon Green remained inactive.
