CRIME NEWS

  • Police investigated a shooting at West Philadelphia’s Christy Rec Center on Wednesday just after 4 p.m. where five people were injured—two children suffered grazes, two teenagers were shot with one remaining in critical condition, and a staff member was also injured and is expected to recover.  WHYY
  • Philadelphia police arrested Shomari Betancourt after an East Falls shooting on July 27 that injured four people; officers treated a 26-year-old woman in critical condition, a 23-year-old man, and two others for gunshot wounds, and Betancourt now faces charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault.  KYW Newsradio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Philadelphia offers a busy weekend with a stage production of Beetlejuice running through Sunday at the Academy of Music with tickets starting at $30.64 & a mystery adventure at the Philadelphia Zoo on Saturday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. that challenges visitors to solve a Victorian-era murder mystery. Other events include concerts, festivals, sporting events and cultural showcases across the region.  WHYY
  • Mayor Parker’s administration has commissioned a statue of Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander for Thomas Paine Plaza, selecting celebrated sculptor Vinnie Bagwell’s design, The First Lady of Law, to replace the removed statue of Frank Rizzo. Bagwell’s sculpture will cost $700,000 — plus an 18% design fee — and will be unveiled in spring to honor Alexander’s legacy as a pioneering figure in Philadelphia history.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

  • Mayor Cherelle Parker announced on Wednesday that she named 10 new officials to fill posts that had been empty for as little as one week and as long as 16 months. Among the appointees, Kehinde 'Kenny' Solanke will become commissioner of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services (salary: $236k) and Charlie Ellison, who started on July 7 with a salary of $135k, will direct Immigrant Affairs while interim chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer Donna Jackson Stephans was also named.  The Philadelphia Inquirer

SPORTS NEWS

  • Dick Allen was posthumously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame nearly 50 years after he retired—he died in 2020 and never saw the honor. His career was marred by harsh and racist media coverage in Philadelphia during the 1960s and 70s—misnaming him and contributing to the delay in recognition.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • The Phillies acquired closer Jhoan Duran from the Twins on Wednesday evening in a trade that sent right-hander Mick Abel and catcher Eduardo Tait to Minnesota—Duran, 27, is under club control through 2027 and is expected to reinforce the bullpen for a playoff push. Manager Dave Dombrowski noted that the deal fills a key late-inning need as Philadelphia continues to shape its roster.  The Philadelphia Inquirer
